ATS members recently had a rare opportunity to explore NorthConnex during a scheduled maintenance shutdown, gaining first-hand insight into the systems and infrastructure that keep the tunnel operating safely.
Organised by George Watfa and led by Thomas Burke, NorthConnex Manager, NorthWestern Roads Group, the tour took participants through several key operational areas, including the water treatment plant, Ventilation Stations 1 and 2, an entry portal from the M2 Motorway, a cross passage without equipment and the tunnel’s feature lighting.
The visit formed part of an ATS site tour designed to deepen engineers’ understanding of tunnel operations and infrastructure systems. The event also offered insight into how ventilation, water treatment, drainage and other integrated engineering systems support safety and performance under normal and emergency conditions.
One participant described the experience as “pretty amazing”, noting that Thomas was “incredibly knowledgeable and generous with his time”.
The tour was oversubscribed, reflecting strong interest in practical learning opportunities and direct engagement with the people responsible for operating and maintaining major tunnel infrastructure.
The ATS thanks George, Thomas and the Our NCX team for sharing their time and expertise.
