Presentation overview

This presentation presents advanced TBM engineering approaches that address complex challenges in contemporary tunnelling projects. The seminar provides technical insights into proven design strategies for managing difficult geological conditions, improving excavation efficiency, and reducing project risks across infrastructure, mining, and pumped hydro applications.

The discussion explores key engineering concepts that enhance project outcomes, including advanced geological detection systems for improved ground characterization, innovative excavation mechanics that adapt to varying formations, integrated ground support solutions that optimize safety and progress rates, and refined mucking systems that increase overall efficiency. These technical approaches are demonstrated through detailed case studies from recent mining and pumped hydro TBM projects, illustrating how specific design decisions translate into measurable performance improvements and successful project delivery.

The presentation offers actionable engineering insights and validated approaches applicable to tunnel planning, TBM specification development, and solutions for challenging ground conditions. Technical and project management professionals involved in tunnelling operations will gain an understanding of methods that can be applied to enhance project performance.

Key technical takeaways:

  • Design principles for customizing TBMs to address diverse geological challenges in tunnel construction
  • Engineering solutions for optimizing excavation performance and construction efficiency in complex ground conditions
  • Case study analysis demonstrating the relationship between technical decisions and project outcomes in risk management

Speaker biography

Linran Hao is a Technical Lead at CREG with a background in mechanical engineering. He specializes in tunnel boring machines (TBMs) – the large machines used to dig tunnels underground.

Linran has worked in TBM design and development for many years. He has led the design and management of over 10 TBM projects around the world, giving him experience with different types of ground conditions and construction requirements in various countries.

He now focuses on developing, managing, and maintaining TBMs specifically for the Australian market. His main goal is to create tunnelling solutions that work more efficiently, use less energy, and provide better safety for workers and the public. Through his work, Linran helps ensure that Australia’s tunnel construction projects benefit from reliable, modern technology that meets the country’s specific needs.
