Presentation Overview
The North East Link is carving twin three-lane tunnels 6.5 kilometres through Melbourne’s northeast, connecting the Eastern Freeway to the M80 Ring Road. This presentation shares practical insights from a project that’s now 50% complete with an outstanding safety record. The project uses two approaches: two 15.1-metre-diameter Tunnel Boring Machines for the main drives, and the Sequential Excavation Method with roadheaders for the more complex sections. Working through highly variable ground conditions in a busy urban area has required innovative solutions at every stage. The presentation covers the challenges the team has faced and how they’ve addressed them—from adapting excavation methods to suit different ground conditions, managing tunnel portals in sensitive locations, and using advanced monitoring systems that track progress and ground movements in real time. You will also hear how digital engineering and Building Information Modelling have improved both efficiency and safety on site, as well as how the project balances major construction work with minimising impacts on surrounding communities. This session offers practical lessons from a significant Australian tunnelling project and a chance to discuss approaches relevant to your work.
