Register now for this joint Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) & ATS Technical Session on Geotechnical uncertainty and lessons from geotechnical forensics in underground projects

Geological uncertainty is an unavoidable aspect of underground construction. Despite advances in site investigation techniques and geological modelling, the ground can never be fully characterised before excavation begins, and project teams must routinely make critical decisions based on incomplete information.

This presentation explores how geological risk is allocated and managed in underground projects, examining the relationship between geological models, contractual frameworks, and construction decision-making. Particular attention will be given to the observational method, where interpretation and adaptation continue throughout excavation and the distinction between design and construction responsibilities can become less clear.

Drawing on lessons from forensic investigations and dispute resolution processes, Emilio will discuss how many underground project failures are not solely the result of unforeseen ground conditions, but rather the decisions made in response to uncertainty. The presentation will provide practical insights into the technical, commercial, and organisational factors that influence outcomes on complex underground projects, and the lessons these investigations offer for future practice.

This presentation will be of interest to geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, tunnelling practitioners, and project managers involved in the investigation, design, and delivery of underground infrastructure.

Dr Emilio Linde-Arias

Director, Alvarez & Marsal

Dr Emilio Linde-Arias has over twenty years of international experience in major infrastructure projects, combining expertise in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, tunnelling, and forensic engineering. His experience spans the planning, site investigation, design, construction, and forensic assessment of tunnels and other major infrastructure projects.
He has acted as a Geotechnical Expert in high-value disputes, providing testimony before ICSID and ICC tribunals, as well as in FIDIC Dispute Adjudication proceedings. His expert appointments have addressed issues relating to tunnel design, geological conditions, groundwater, and construction delays.

Dr Linde-Arias has published on geological uncertainty and the contractual allocation of geological risk, and has worked on major infrastructure projects across Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
