At the ATC2025 Awards, the Allen Neyland Tunnelling Achievement Award was presented to Dr Bill Bamford in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Australian tunnelling industry over many decades.
Bill was unable to attend the ceremony due to ill health, whereby the award was instead received on his behalf. We were deeply saddened to learn that he passed away the following day.
As one of the founding members of the ATS (through its former embodiments), and the organisation’s first Chair, Bill’s dedication, expertise, and integrity have left a lasting legacy across our industry. His influence is felt not only in the projects he helped deliver, but in the many people he mentored and inspired throughout his career.
The ATS extends its heartfelt condolences to Bill’s family, friends, and colleagues.
We honour his life, his work, and his contribution to tunnelling in Australia by republishing the article Bill helped us with for our 50th Anniversary Celebrations.
