SUMMARY:Geological Uncertainty and Lessons from Geotechnical Forensics in Underground Projects
DESCRIPTION:Register now for this joint Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) & ATS Technical Session on Geotechnical uncertainty and lessons from geotechnical forensics in underground projects \nGeological uncertainty is an unavoidable aspect of underground construction. Despite advances in site investigation techniques and geological modelling\, the ground can never be fully characterised before excavation begins\, and project teams must routinely make critical decisions based on incomplete information. \n\nThis presentation explores how geological risk is allocated and managed in underground projects\, examining the relationship between geological models\, contractual frameworks\, and construction decision-making. Particular attention will be given to the observational method\, where interpretation and adaptation continue throughout excavation and the distinction between design and construction responsibilities can become less clear. \nDrawing on lessons from forensic investigations and dispute resolution processes\, Emilio will discuss how many underground project failures are not solely the result of unforeseen ground conditions\, but rather the decisions made in response to uncertainty. The presentation will provide practical insights into the technical\, commercial\, and organisational factors that influence outcomes on complex underground projects\, and the lessons these investigations offer for future practice. \nThis presentation will be of interest to geotechnical engineers\, engineering geologists\, tunnelling practitioners\, and project managers involved in the investigation\, design\, and delivery of underground infrastructure. \n\n\n\n \n\nDr Emilio Linde-Arias \nDirector\, Alvarez & Marsal \n\n\n\nDr Emilio Linde-Arias has over twenty years of international experience in major infrastructure projects\, combining expertise in geotechnical engineering\, engineering geology\, tunnelling\, and forensic engineering. His experience spans the planning\, site investigation\, design\, construction\, and forensic assessment of tunnels and other major infrastructure projects.\nHe has acted as a Geotechnical Expert in high-value disputes\, providing testimony before ICSID and ICC tribunals\, as well as in FIDIC Dispute Adjudication proceedings. His expert appointments have addressed issues relating to tunnel design\, geological conditions\, groundwater\, and construction delays. \nDr Linde-Arias has published on geological uncertainty and the contractual allocation of geological risk\, and has worked on major infrastructure projects across Europe\, the Middle East and the Americas. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The 21st International Symposium on Aerodynamics\, Ventilation and Fire in Tunnels
DESCRIPTION:Coming to Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre\, 30th November – 2nd December 2026\nANNOUNCING 20% DISCOUNT FOR ATS MEMBERS! \nWhat is ISAVFT? \nThe International Symposium on Aerodynamics\, Ventilation and Fire in Tunnels (ISAVFT) is the world’s longest‑running and most authoritative conference series dedicated exclusively to tunnel aerodynamics\, ventilation\, fire safety\, and underground environmental control. For over 50 years\, ISAVFT has been the forum where the hardest tunnel safety problems are debated\, tested\, and advanced. \nDeep Technical Focus \nISAVFT is unapologetically technical and rigorously applied. Core themes include: \n\nTunnel aerodynamics (pressure waves\, piston effect\, comfort\, high‑speed rail) Ventilation systems (longitudinal\, transverse\, jet fans\, energy optimisation)\nFire and smoke dynamics (critical velocity\, evacuation\, suppression systems) Air quality & pollution control\nOperations\, maintenance & real‑incident lessons\nAdvanced modelling (CFD\, digital twins\, full‑scale testing)\nFuture transport (electric & hydrogen vehicles\, automation\, ultra‑high‑speed systems)\n\nAcademic Rigor\, Industry Relevance \n\nFull peer review of all technical papers\nKeynotes from global leaders in tunnel safety and fluid mechanics\nStrong mix of research\, design guidance\, case studies\, and failure analysis\nTrusted by those who design\, approve\, operate\, and insure tunnels\n\nISAVFT bridges academia and real‑world consequence. \nGlobal Pedigree \nFirst symposium held in Canterbury\, UK (1973)\, rooted in British hydromechanics research\, ISAVFT is held every 2–3 years across Europe\, USA\, Australia\, and beyond. Recent editions hosted in Lyon\, Athens\, Copenhagen\, Melbourne\, and other global centres. Organised under the ISAVFT / BHR lineage\, maintaining continuity with its original scientific foundations. \nThe Bottom Line \nISAVFT is the global benchmark conference for tunnel aerodynamics\, fire\, and ventilation. Five decades. Peer‑reviewed. Incident‑driven. Open knowledge. Permanently citable. \nWhen tunnels matter\, ISAVFT leads. \nThe Sir Alan Muir Wood Prestige Lecture is a flagship\, invited lecture held to honour Sir Alan Muir Wood\, widely regarded as the father of modern tunnelling. \nSir Alan Muir Wood (1921–2009) was a pivotal figure in underground engineering: a leading consultant on the Channel Tunnel\, founding President of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA‑AITES)\, former President of the Institution of Civil Engineers\, and a driving force behind the modern\, risk‑based approach to tunnelling design and delivery. \nThe lecture is reserved for internationally recognised thought leaders and provides a platform for: \nStrategic reflection on tunnel engineering practice \nLessons from major projects and failures \nInnovation\, uncertainty management\, and future direction of underground construction \nIt reflects Sir Alan’s central belief that engineering judgement\, innovation\, and understanding of risk—not prescriptive rules alone—are key to safe and economic tunnelling. \nWithin ISAVFT\, the Sir Alan Muir Wood Prestige Lecture represents the highest‑profile intellectual contribution of the symposium\, reinforcing ISAVFT’s role as a forum for: \n\nLong‑term thinking\, not just technical detail\nCross‑disciplinary insight across aerodynamics\, ventilation\, fire\, and operations\nKnowledge transfer between generations of tunnel engineers\nThe lecture is typically sponsored\, formally presented\, and positioned as a prestige event within the symposium programme.\n\nLectures are archived and published\, forming part of the permanent technical record of the profession\, consistent with Sir Alan Muir Wood’s commitment to open knowledge\, professional leadership\, and engineering excellence.
