DESCRIPTION:Summary \nWater ingress during underground construction has been known to cause structural instability\, heightened maintenance costs\, and pose an array of safety hazards. These hazards range from the seemingly minimal moisture damage to the more severe cracking.  Traditionally\, solutions such as grouting\, drainage pipes\, and repair injections have been employed. However\, these methods are not only temporary but also prove to be rather costly\, creating a case for an innovative and sustainable alternative.  This webinar will present water management using drainage mesh solutions along with case studies from projects that have pioneered the usage of these mesh solutions. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe first road tunnel misting fire suppression system in Australia has now been commissioned in the Heysen Tunnels\, outside Adelaide. \nIn this hybrid event\, the ATS presents an afternoon of talks celebrating the Heysen Tunnel Refit & Safety Upgrade Project holistically and canvases some: \n\nTechnical details of the water mist installed for fire suppression\,\nThe context of road tunnels within the different applications of mist in other infrastructure and spaces\, and\nAn international picture of road tunnel safety governance.\n\nTiming (NOTE CHANGE IN TIMING)\n\n2:00 to 2:30 pm\, arrival and refreshments\n2:30 to 5:00 pm\, presentations\n5:00 to 7:00 pm\, refreshments and networking\, possibly visit the mist demonstration downstairs.\n\nSpeakers\nAlex Palle \n \nAlex Palle is the owner and CEO of VID FIREKILL\, the leader in low pressure mist\, and the renowned test institute Danish Fire Laboratories. He will fly into Adelaide to support his local distributor LPG Fire Australia who supplied and supported the Heysen mist system. With a BSc and an MBA\, growing up in a nozzle-designing household\, working all roles through the businesses at various stages\, and now owning the companies\, Alex has unique understanding of how to break up water. His life vision is to change the “conventional” fixed firefighting industry by bringing innovative\, value adding and sustainable firefighting technologies to the market. He will describe the science behind misting nozzles\, and road tunnel misting technology within the broad spectrum of mist applications. \nDr Conrad Stacey \n \nDr Conrad Stacey is a Director of leading underground ventilation and fire safety consultants Stacey Agnew\, and Vice President of Delve Stacey Agnew in the US. Conrad’s credits include seminal reports on livestock shipping heat stress risk\, and co-authorship of a paper on the gravitational energy drivers for the geodynamo. He has worked on hypersonic upper atmospheric flight and river and flood plain hydraulics. A common thread through Conrad’s work in varied areas is a core focus on the fundamental physics and the engineering thought involved\, all within the big picture of the community interest. He will talk about the design of the Heysen suppression system\, operating policy on fire suppression\, and organisational barriers to adoption of road tunnel misting. \nShane Faulkhead \n \nShane Faulkhead of M&E Solutions\, for this purpose also representing McConnell Dowell as Managing Contractor for the Heysen Tunnels Refit & Safety Upgrade Project. Besides his tunnel experience\, Shane has global experience in a very diverse range of engineering fields\, making him a polymath of engineering and site installation. He was intimately involved with the equipment installation and problem solving in the Heysen project. His talk will focus on construction of the fire suppression systems in Heysen and in other forms of tunnel. \nRahul Gupta \n \nRahul Gupta is a civil engineering professional with three decades in all aspects of highway infrastructure development\, from strategic planning & engineering to cost control and environmental management. He is currently Chief Engineer (Tunnels) in the Indian Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Secretary General of the Indian Road Congress. Previously\, he served as Technical Secretary to the Director General (Road Development) and Special Secretary to the Government of India\, providing advice on all road and highway development issues in the country. He is a member of Technical Committee on Tunnels of the World Road Association (PIARC) and the Governing Council of the Tunnelling Association of India (TAI). He also served as Technical Advisor to PIARC’s Strategic Theme (Resilient Infrastructure). \nRahul has implemented major bridge and tunnel projects in the Himalayan region\, successfully supervising the construction of India’s two longest highway tunnels\, the Chenani-Nashiri (9 km) and Banihal-Qazigund (8 km). Over the past five years\, he has overseen highway development projects in the strategically critical North-Western Himalayan region. \nRahul gets actively involved in disaster rescue operations. He ensured swift relief to flood victims by promptly restoring highway communication in close coordination with the army during the worst-recorded floods in the Kashmir Valley in September 2014. He also successfully coordinated the rescue operation of stranded workers in the collapsed Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarakhand\, with part of that coordination being calling on our own Arnold Dix to assist. \nRahul offers a high-level expert overview of safety issues on Indian roads and in tunnels\, and will give us the benefit of a different perspective to the paradigms we follow in Australia\, including on adoption of water based suppression. \n Session Chair\nMr Phil Cornish \n \n Engineering Director from Bell Rock Engineering. Phil has more than 35 years’ experience in infrastructure design and delivery\, including road and rail tunnels. Phil was involved with the Westconnex Tunnel Project in Sydney between 2014 and late 2017\, as the M4 East Construction Manager for Sydney Motorway Corporation. DESCRIPTION:Event Summary\nThe ATS Young Members invites all students and young professionals (35 years of age or under) on a site visit to the Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) Stage 2 works\, on Monday\, 2 December 2024. \nThe site visit will include a brief presentation on the WHT project followed by a guided tour of the Cammeray ventilation tunnels and Falcon Street decline tunnel. \nThis event is proudly supported by: \n \nProject background\nWestern Harbour Tunnel (WHT) will be a 6.5 kilometre road tunnel connecting the Rozelle Interchange to the Warringah Freeway near North Sydney and crossing underneath Sydney Harbour between Birchgrove and Waverton. The project is being delivered in two stages. Stage 2 includes connections from Stage 1 at Cove Street in Birchgrove\, underneath Sydney Harbour to the Warringah Freeway in North Sydney\, and complete tunnel fit-out. \nTunnel excavation is currently progressing below the Warringah Freeway towards Ridge Street in North Sydney. Sean joined RUC Mining in 2009 and managed their shaft-sinking business for 15 years until RUC’s recent acquisition by Redpath Australia. The use of Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) models is an established approach for simulating ground conditions involving jointed rock masses. When combined with discontinuum numerical modelling\, the approach can capture realistic ground behaviours such as interlocking and unravelling. \nThis talk will present a comparison between static kinematic block stability assessments (the traditional DFN design method) against a DFN-based Distinct Element Modelling (DEM) approach. The comparison of the two DFN methods provides a framework into predicting interlocking and unravelling behaviours and an additional perspective on the definition of key blocks. This framework enables a quantifiable ground behaviour focused approach for the design of excavations and ground support. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this half-day workshop in Brisbane.\nWorkshop summary \nThe ATS has established a diverse\, representative Working Group to progress an updated revision of Australia’s tunnel fire safety standard AS4825.  It is proposed to be titled “Fire in Tunnels”\, covering fire safety and asset resilience.  The governance around how an appropriate level of fire safety is demonstrated and accepted for a tunnel is an extremely important topic to be covered by such a standard.  Australia has unique legal and political requirements\, and Australian fire engineering practice has a diverse set of approaches\, there is a need to ‘ventilate’ and share views on the approaches applied\, and learn what we can from other jurisdictions. \nThis workshop will provide a forum for working group members\, industry stakeholders and fire engineering practitioners to engage on the issue.  It is not primarily a training session\, although it will certainly be informative\, and worth attending for that purpose alone. SUMMARY:ITA Lecture - Practical Aspects of Segmental Tunnel Lining Design
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Practical Aspects of Segmental Tunnel Lining Design \nAfter several decades of continuous progress\, mechanized tunnelling has now become the main method applied in almost all types of geology\, all sizes\, and in increasingly shorter lengths. The predominant excavation support system for TBM tunnels consists of a one-pass precast concrete segmental liner which in addition to typical use in soft ground contexts is also increasingly applied in competent rock settings to better manage the geotechnical and hydrogeological risks. The first presentation of this lecture covers necessary details for analysis and design and provides in-depth information allowing tunnel engineers to start designing tunnel segmental linings. DESCRIPTION:The Hobsons Bay Main Sewer (HBMS)\, constructed in the 1960s\, transfers approximately 30 per cent of Melbourne’s wastewater to the Western Treatment Plan at Werribee. \nThe sewer alignment has a single sewer crossing under the Yarra River\, which has deteriorated to a point where it requires rehabilitation and/or replacement. SUMMARY:ITA Lecture - EPB tunnelling: environmental aspects and re-use opportunities of the conditioned muck
DESCRIPTION:The rapid development of mechanised tunnelling in the last decades has increased the tunnelling community’s focus on the environmental aspects of tunnel construction. The excavation carried out by using EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) machines often requires the use of foaming agents\, specific products that are added to the medium intended to be excavated\, in order to make the excavation process possible. The produced muck can be considered more than a simple “landfill material” and its re-use is strongly suggested in view of sustainable excavation and circular economy principles. However\, the correct management process should be followed. SUMMARY:Geocomposite Tunnel Invert Drainage - Online technical presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presentation abstract:  \nCavidrain Invert geocomposite systems are used to form a drainage layer beneath the road pavement of tunnel floors. The use of Cavidrain Invert offers a number of advantages over more traditional methods (which use crushed stone and pipes) such as: (i) reduced excavation (as they form a much thinner layer compared to crushed stone layers\, requiring less excavation thus accelerating the construction process); (ii) faster installation (they can be quickly laid down\, reducing installation time compared to traditional methods); (iii) lower costs (achieved through the reduction of excavation and the acceleration of the construction process); (iv) improved drainage (as they provide larger void to facilitate a better water flow compared to crushed stone and thus ensuring effective drainage); (v) reduced mineral scale buildup (by mitigating problems caused by mineral deposits that can clog traditional drainage systems).
