SUMMARY:ATS VIC - Ground Model Development West Gate Tunnel Project\, Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Key Speaker: Trevor O’Shannessy\, Principal Geotechnical Engineer\, Golder Associates \nDate: Tuesday 5 March 2019 \nTime: Commencing at 6: pm (with refreshments at 5.30pm) \nWhere: Engineers Australia\, Level 31\, 600 Bourke St\, Melbourne \nCost: Free\, refreshments provided (Please register at EA Victorian Division’s events page) \n\n\n\n\nThe West Gate Tunnel Project will provide an alternative river crossing to the West Gate Bridge. The key components of the Project include the widening of the West Gate Freeway\, a tunnel under Yarraville and an elevated motorway that connects the West Gate Freeway with the Port of Melbourne\, CityLink\, and the Melbourne central city. \nTrevor has over 15 years of experience in geotechnical engineering in a wide range of projects. He has been involved in a number major tunnelling projects situated in Melbourne’s complex geology\, including West Gate Tunnel\, Melbourne Metro\, East West Link and Melbourne Main Sewer. \nFor the West Gate Tunnel Project\, Trevor acted as an advisor to Transurban supporting concept through to reference design stages of the project. He continues to remain involved during the current construction phase of this important project. \nThe tunnelling component of the project will pass through variable sedimentary and igneous deposits of the Cainozoic (Quaternary & Tertiary) era. These deposits reflect the complex geological and geomorphological processes that have shaped the region\, including tectonic movements and development of “palaeo-valley” structures. \nThis presentation will discuss the early development of a ground model for the area based on pre-construction geotechnical studies.

SUMMARY:ATS NSW/AGS - A Sydney Heads Rail Tunnel
DESCRIPTION:A SYDNEY HEADS RAIL TUNNEL\nA NEW RAILWAY CORRIDOR WHICH ALSO PROMISES SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE WAY SYDNEY GROWS \nA rail tunnel under Sydney Heads would connect the Sydney CBD through to Gosford via a 60km long tunnel extending from Bondi Junction Station on the Eastern Suburbs/Illawarra Line. Brookvale would become a new satellite CBD\, only 20 minutes train travel time from the Sydney CBD. Ultimately the project could morph into a faster rail link between Newcastle\, the Sydney CBD and Canberra. Another option would be to connect the proposed Sydney Metro West to the Eastern Suburbs railway line via the existing Martin Place Station. The Town Hall Station lower platforms of the Illawarra Line would then be connected directly to St James Station’s new lower platforms via new tunnels. New tunnels\, south of St James Station\, could then be taken to Malabar for example. The project would also reduce urban traffic congestion and more broadly\, improve road safety\, by reducing the number of cars on our roads. \n5:30pm – 6:00pm    Assembly\, light refreshments \n6:00pm – 7:00pm    Presentation \n7:00pm – 7:30pm    Questions\, Discussion & Drinks \nSpeakers:\nTed Nye – Director – EJ Nye & Associates Pty Ltd\, B. Eng(Civil)\, Dip. Eng(Civil)\, FIEAust\, CPEng\, NPER \nTed is a consultant specialising in underground engineering for transport related projects\, although he is also currently involved with a pumped storage hydro project. He commenced his career on the Melbourne Underground Rail and after extensive experience gained overseas moved to Sydney as the Design Team Leader of the land tunnels of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel. More recent experience includes the Sydney Airport Line soft ground tunnel\, road and bus tunnels in Brisbane\, and road tunnels Melbourne and Sydney (in the past year as a specialist advisor). Other recent rail projects being the Melbourne Metro (client side) and Sydney Metro Stage 1 (design). The initial concept of a rail tunnel under Sydney Heads\, Ted conceived as far back as 1996 and canvased the idea to the then Statewide Roads. The concept has been further developed during 2017 and 2018 with support from industry colleagues Peter Prince and Dr Sam Lackey. \n\n\n\n\nDate: 20/02/2019 | 5.30PM for 6PM start \nVenue:  The Zenith Theatre\, Cnr Mcintosh St & Railway St\, Chatswood NSW \nKey Speaker: Ted Nye \nEvent Contact: NKontsevaya@engineersaustralia.org.au \nClick here to register \nClick here to see flyer
