These failures are caused by high peak voltages\, a result of using Active Front End (AFE) VSDs combined with long motor cable lengths\, extending to 500 meters. This session examines the underlying electrical phenomena contributing to these issues and why conventional mitigation methods\, such as standard filters\, are often insufficient. \nParticipants will gain practical insight into proven engineering solutions that deliver near-sinusoidal voltage at the motor terminals\, reducing stress on insulation and extending asset life. SUMMARY:Site visit: fire suppression condition monitoring at AirportLink
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nRoad tunnels have design lives of 50-100 years\, with Mechanical\, Electrical and Fire assets having design lives of only 5-25 years. Managing deterioration that triggers changes in condition and performance is essential to enable the fire safety strategy defined in the Fire Engineering Report\, as well as to identify need for amending it as both technology\, technical and legal requirements change. This presentation will present a project in which the condition of the combined fire mains in an established road tunnel (AirportLink) was assessed through non-destructive techniques (NDT) to inform the asset manager of the expected service life remaining\, which in turn informs both short- and long-term investment. The presentation will be followed by a visit to the tunnel during a maintenance closure to discuss some of the drivers and challenges of the project arising from the available maintenance windows and the physical layout of the system. \nThis site visit is targeted primarily towards young engineers\, however we do welcome all engineers. \nProgram timeline\n6.30pm – Registration\, safety check and brief introduction. \n7.30pm – Fire mains condition assessment presentation \n9.00pm – Maintenance toolbox \n10:30pm – Tunnel closes for access \n10:45pm – Group tunnel walk \n12:30am – Group exits tunnel and wrap up \n1:00am – Site visit concludes \nThis site visit concludes after midnight and the timetable may be subject to change depending on traffic conditions. \nMinimum PPE requirements\nAttendees are required to have full PPE for participation\, including: \n\nLong Trousers – 2 Reflective Stripes\nLong Sleeve Shirt – Reflective Stripes\nClear Safety Glasses\nHard Hat (in Date)\nGloves\nLaced Up Steel Capped Boots (Secured & Fitted)\nHearing Protection\n\nAttendees that do not comply with the minimum PPE requirement will not be admitted on the day. \nPlease Note: Mandatory alcohol testing and random drug testing will be conducted upon arrival.  \nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\nJaime Cadena Gomez\nPrincipal Engineer\, Fire Safety\n\nJaime Cadena Gomez is an engineering professional with 17 years of experience understanding and managing operational risks and performance of critical infrastructure. SUMMARY:Testing of sprayed fibre reinforced concrete for the design of tunnel linings
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nFibre reinforced concrete (FRC) design has been widely used for sprayed permanent linings in tunnels with substantial recent developments in design methods and mix design. One such development has been reliance on the toughness characteristics to inform the design versus the different methods of panel testing. This presentation discusses the 2025 fib bulletin 116 recommendations with a focus on testing and performance criteria. Gan is a domain Expert for Sprayed Concrete and Fibre Reinforced Concrete under Intelligent National Productivity and Quality Specification Singapore since Mar 2019. From 1998 to present\, Gan has been involved in over 22 sprayed fibre concrete tunnel linings and over 20 fibre concrete precast segmental and cast concrete tunnel lining projects.

These models demand a fundamentally different approach to Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs) than is required under traditional Design-Bid-Build contracts. \nThis seminar brings together legal and geotechnical expertise to examine how GBRs function in contemporary Australian practice. From the legal perspective\, the presentation explores GBR structures as they are incorporated into various construction contracts across Australia\, examining risk allocation mechanisms\, drafting precision\, and dispute resolution frameworks. SUMMARY:Design of High-Performance Rock Bolted Thin Shotcrete Linings
DESCRIPTION:Design of High-Performance Rock Bolted Thin Shotcrete Linings\nFrom Basics to Advanced Concepts\nOverview\nTunnels in poor to fair-quality rock masses (i.e. Q-values between 0.4 and 10) can generally achieve global stability and ground support primarily through ground reinforcement\, such as rock bolts. Such reinforcement elements not only hold unstable rock wedges and blocks but also provide local shear and tensile reinforcement where they cross rock defects or discontinuities\, enhancing the rock mass’s capacity to redistribute stresses during tunnel excavation more safely. However\, to keep costs down\, rock bolt spacing must also be efficient; as a result\, the use of a surface retention system\, such as shotcrete\, is still necessary to promote local stability and stress arching\, thereby supporting the rock mass between the rock bolts. In these cases\, a thin shotcrete lining (75-150 mm thick) is often used. It is usually designed to span the loads between the rock bolts\, accounting for both flexural and punching failure mechanisms. When combined with long cables\, as it is frequently used in mining\, the system can also play a greater role in global stability\, reducing the risk of larger failure mechanisms with volumes of the order of the excavation. It can\, in principle\, also be designed for dynamic loads if the bolts are designed for them. This presentation will discuss some basic concepts of this support system\, including the use of fibre reinforcement\, and then move on to more advanced concepts\, such as compressive membrane action and non-linear concrete design. \nSpeaker\n\n \n\nDr David Oliveira \nDiscipline Leader\, Ground\, Aurecon \n\n\n\nDr David is a Chartered Professional with 27 years of experience in civil engineering and mining geomechanics. He is also currently the Vice-Chair of Working Group 12 – Sprayed Concrete of the International Tunnelling Association. SUMMARY:High speed rail tunnel aerodynamics
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe webinar will focus on the aerodynamic phenomena and effects associated with the high-speed passage of a train through a tunnel. We will begin by describing the pressure waves generated as a high-speed train enters a tunnel\, passes through changes in tunnel geometry\, crosses another train and exits the tunnel. Their generation\, propagation\, reflection\, and transmission will be discussed. Airflow patterns induced inside the tunnel\, influenced by blockage ratio\, tunnel geometry and train speed\, will also be presented. \nIn the second part\, we will examine the impact of these pressure waves on passenger tympanic comfort and safety\, both on the platforms of underground stations and on board high-speed trains. Their effects on tunnel equipment\, such as ventilation systems and platform screen doors\, as well as on the trains themselves\, will also be addressed. Finally\, we will discuss aerodynamic drag and the factors that help reduce it\, including the construction of pressure relief shafts or the creation of a partial air vacuum. \nThis will lead us to conclude with a brief exploration of the hyperloop concept. He is the founding CEO of GESTE Engineering\, an engineering consultancy specializing in railway technology and safety. He specializes in aerodynamics\, ventilation\, and safety. As a consulting engineer and project director\, he has contributed to numerous projects in these fields for railway\, metro\, road\, and river tunnels across Europe\, the United Arab Emirates\, and the United States. He is also an expert in hyperloop system.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaolo Molteni\nProject Manager – Business Unit Manager FLOWS\, GESTE\n\nPaolo Molteni (1971)\, an aerospace engineer and PhD graduate from the Politecnico di Milano\, is a consulting engineer specialized in ventilation\, aerodynamics\, thermal engineering\, and pedestrian flows. He has specific training in computational fluid dynamics and is an expert in numerical simulation and computation (CFD). He is the Head of the FLOWS Business Unit (aerodynamics\, thermal engineering\, ventilation\, and flows) at GESTE Engineering. He has carried out numerous projects involving the ventilation of metro tunnels\, road and railway tunnels\, as well as stations and buildings open to the public. He is the main developer of the 1D calculation software TNT\, designed for the simulation of unsteady\, compressible\, and non-isothermal flows in complex tunnel networks.

It features 6.5 kilometres of dual three-lane tunnels extending from the Warringah Freeway in Cammeray to the WestConnex interchange at Rozelle. He is a Technical Director (Tunnels) with Aurecon\, Vice-Chair of Working Group 12 – Sprayed Concrete of the International Tunnelling Association\, and an invited member of the Canadian Standards Association committee writing the world’s first Tunnel Standard (not a guide). His most recent project experience includes the Westconnex M8\, Westconnex M4-M8\, Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power (UK)\, Sydney Metro West-Central Tunnelling Package\, Western Harbour Tunnel Package 2\, and Borumba Pumped Hydro. \n \nShu Fan Chau \nDeputy Technical Director\, AECOM Canada \nShu Fan is a tunnel engineer with experience in tunnelling of all kinds\, with a specialty in large Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnels. In addition to TBM tunnelling\, Shu Fan’s wide-ranging tunnel expertise includes drill and blast tunnelling\, immersed tube tunnelling\, cut-and-cover tunnels\, deep excavation\, underground structures\, site formation and slope works. \nShu Fan’s expertise in TBM tunnel design was recognised when he was engaged as a tunnel lining design lead for the West Gate Tunnel in Melbourne. Shu Fan completed the preliminary tunnel design and then the detailed design for this TBM project\, considering the difficulties posed by the wide variation in ground conditions\, the high-water pressure\, and many required tunnel openings. \nHis breadth of experience\, too\, is both local and international. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW!\nSite Visit Overview \nSmoke extraction systems have been recently installed across the three MURL Stations (Parliament\, Melbourne Central and Flagstaff) as part of MURL Stage 2 Fire and Life Safety Upgrade. The visit to Melbourne Central Station includes accessing the Draught Relief Shafts (DRS) at the station to observe the recently installed smoke extraction system\, followed by a visit to the station master’s room to view the control and management system of the installed equipment\, and a brief walk along the platform to observe upgrades such as PRM refuge areas\, smoke curtains\, glazing\, and other improvements. \nThis is an opportunity for participants to gain a high-level understanding of the smoke system and to learn about the following aspects: \n\nReal-world constraints when installing new smoke extraction system in brownfield environments not originally designed for them.\nUnderstanding the integration of mechanical components with the station’s existing infrastructure.\nObserving how the smoke extraction system is monitored and controlled by the station master\, including a visit to the station master room to see how the entire train station is managed and how the smoke system integrates with other systems.\nGaining an understanding of the maintenance challenges associated with newly installed systems in a brownfield station.\nViewing new refuge areas\, smoke curtains\, and other station upgrades.\n\nMaximum number of participants: 25 \nPPE Required: \nHardhat\, steel-capped boots\, high vis vest/jacket\, long pants\, long sleeve shirt\, safety glasses and gloves. \nNote: Participants who are not wearing all required PPE will not be permitted to access the Draught Relief Shaft (DRS); however\, they may still take part in the platform walk and visit the station master’s room. \nBrief biography of the individual leading the visit: \nAyman Eltouny is a Mechanical Engineer with over 20 years of experience in the design and delivery of major infrastructure and commercial projects across Australia and internationally. DESCRIPTION:Presentation Summary\nFrom NorthConnex in 2015 to the Western Harbour Tunnel Project today\, we’re reflecting on ten years of change in tunnelling technology and sharing what we’ve learned about monitoring\, navigation\, and robotics. \nOn the monitoring side\, total stations have become far more power-efficient\, underground WiFi enables faster deployments\, and IoT devices now offer better battery life with connectivity options like Starlink. We’ve also started using 3D printing for custom solutions\, and we’ll share practical lessons on what actually works in the field. \nNavigation technology has advanced considerably for roadheaders and bolters. Sandvik’s Cutronic and TRO systems are making tunnelling safer and more precise\, while improvements in visualisation and PTT management help operators work more effectively. Bolter systems have matured with auto-bolt selection\, and web-based platforms now make data far more accessible. \nThe robotics in construction space is showing interesting possibilities. We’ve provided positioning for equipment like ROBY\, Paneller\, and Wall Shaver\, though it’s still early days. This presentation shares practical insights from a project that’s now 50% complete with an outstanding safety record. The project uses two approaches: two 15.1-metre-diameter Tunnel Boring Machines for the main drives\, and the Sequential Excavation Method with roadheaders for the more complex sections. Working through highly variable ground conditions in a busy urban area has required innovative solutions at every stage. The presentation covers the challenges the team has faced and how they’ve addressed them—from adapting excavation methods to suit different ground conditions\, managing tunnel portals in sensitive locations\, and using advanced monitoring systems that track progress and ground movements in real time. Understand key design and construction considerations\, including practical dos and don’ts derived from field experience. \nSpeakers\nRichard Clarke \nSector Manager – Rail and Tunnels\, ABG \n \nRichard spent the first thirty years of his professional career working for several consultants and operators designing\, building and operating UK landfill sites. He gained experience of using a variety of geosynthetic and geocomposite products in addition to boulder clay\, marl\, coal shale and bentonite-enhanced sand primary liners. He later transferred into brownfield remediation overseeing the construction and testing of earthworks\, piling mats and crane pads before a move across to ABG where his practical experience is being brought to bear as Sector Manager for both Tunnels (worldwide) and Rail (UK). \n  \nGoran Erak \nDirector of Civil Engineering\, ABG Geosynthetics \n \nGoran is a civil engineer with 33 years of experience in the UK\, Europe\, Africa and Middle East\, working on a number of challenging projects within a variety of sectors\, including environmental\, tunnels\, highways\, rail\, water\, mining\, structural and residential. He’s responsible for the ABG Geosynthetics Civils division globally\, including monitoring design output for specific projects in this sector and dealing with civil engineering consultancies\, contractors\, government organisations and coordinating research projects with universities. He is also responsible for providing specialist geosynthetic design solutions on unusual or difficult civil engineering Applications as well as managing research and development projects for advanced geosynthetic applications.
