SUMMARY:North East Link Project update and Australian Tunnelling Society annual meeting
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: Contrary to what it says on the Engineers Australia registration page\, this event is completely free to ATS members. Please make sure you register using your ATS email address and the discount will be applied as you move through the registration process.  \nEvent summary \nExplore this year’s key tunnelling developments at the Australian Tunnelling Society (ATS) Victorian Chapter Annual Special Meeting\, where you’ll also witness the election of the 2025 ATS Victorian Committee. \nFollowing these formalities\, this year’s technical session spotlights the latest progress on Melbourne’s North East Link project\, a pivotal tunnelling initiative. \nThe technical session will explore how advancements in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) techniques address complex geological conditions like Silurian bedrock and Yarra River deposits\, along with improved excavation methods and real-time progress monitoring. \nYou’ll also gain insights into the use of digital engineering to enhance safety\, as well as strategies for environmental management and minimising urban disruption. \nLearning outcomes \nIn this presentation\, you will learn: \n\nhow TBM and SEM techniques are integrated to optimise tunnelling in complex geological and urban environments\nthe impact of digital engineering on design accuracy\, construction efficiency and coordination\nthe role of advanced monitoring systems in real-time operational adjustments and environmental management.\n\nProgram \nIn-person: \n\n5.30 pm AEDT: networking\n6.00 pm AEDT: refreshments\n6.30 pm AEDT: meeting and technical presentation\n7.20 pm AEDT: event ends\n\nOnline: \n\n6.30 pm AEDT: meeting and technical presentation\n7.20 pm AEDT: event ends\n\nAbout the speakers \n\nKen Muir\nTechnical Director\, Project Co\, the North East Link Project Central Package\nBiography \nKen Muir is a Chartered Engineer with 40 years of experience in underground works. Currently serving as Technical Director for PCo on the Central Package of the North East Link Project\, Ken’s diverse career spans continents and industries. He began in South African mines before contributing to the Channel Tunnel in the UK. \nHis expertise extends to hydropower projects in Malaysia and Peru\, mine development in Ireland\, and mass transit projects in Spain and Southeast Asia. For the past 18 years\, Ken has been based in Melbourne\, where he has been involved in tendering and working on a wide range of projects both in Australia and Southeast Asia. \n  \n \nPaul Thomas\nDirector\, D&C Central\, North East Link Program\nBiography \nPaul Thomas is a Chartered Engineer with 35 years of experience in underground/tunnelling and heavy civil engineering projects. Currently the Director D&C Central for NELP (State Delivery Authority)\, Paul’s career began in 1988 in South Wales\, UK. \nHis international experience\, spanning 22 years\, includes work on mass transit and hydropower underground/tunnelling projects across Singapore\, Hong Kong\, New Delhi\, Riyadh\, and Australia. In 2015\, Paul transitioned to a role with the State Government as Deputy Director for the Melbourne Metro Tunnel\, bringing his extensive global expertise to bear on local infrastructure projects. \nThis event is supported by ARUP.

SUMMARY:Technical Seminar Ground Stabilisation by Ground Freezing: International Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this hybrid event to explore the theory\, applications\, and case studies of ground freezing. \nNote: when you register\, please specify if you will be attending in person or online. \nAbout Ground Freezing \nArtificial ground freezing is a construction technique that is used in the construction of shafts\, mines and tunnels to provide temporary ground support and groundwater control when other conventional methods such as dewatering\, shoring and grouting or soil mixing are not feasible. \nGround freezing is a versatile construction technique used to temporarily solidify the ground. By inserting pipes and circulating a cold brine or refrigerant\, heat is extracted from the soil\, causing it to freeze and form a solid mass. This technique is invaluable in challenging conditions\, such as in soft ground or the presence of groundwater. \nPresentation \n\nGround freezing principles and applications\nGround characterisation and laboratory testing for ground freezing design\nIn situ monitoring during construction\nProject examples from various countries\n\nSpeaker \nMichael Löffler\, a leading expert in ground freezing\, heads the group at CDM Smith (Germany) specialising in this technique. His projects include the cross passages at the Silvertown and High Speed 2 tunnels in London\, the tunnels under the Suez Canal in Ismailia (Egypt)\, the new construction of the federal intelligence service building in Berlin\, the North-South metro line in Cologne and the Post Tower high-rise in Bonn. \nSponsors \n \n
