SUMMARY:ATS QLD trivia night for mental health awareness
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nJoin the Queensland Australian Tunnelling Society and Diversity in Tunnelling for an interactive trivia night supporting mental health awareness in the construction industry. This social event combines networking\, industry engagement\, and fundraising to support MATES in Construction. Participants will engage in a series of trivia rounds covering general knowledge\, tunnelling history\, and diversity topics\, while building stronger professional connections in a relaxed environment. The event promotes the importance of mental health\, inclusion\, and peer support across project teams and workplaces. This event provides an opportunity to strengthen industry networks\, increase awareness of mental health resources\, and contribute to a meaningful cause that supports wellbeing across the sector. \nA table booking of 8 guests enjoy a discounted total price of $150! Please contact eaqevents@engineersaustralia.org.au to book. \nTicket price includes pizza and two drinks per person. \nProgram timeline\n5.30pm AEST – Registration opens\, meet up for team building \n6.00pm AEST – Trivia starts \n8.30pm AEST – Event concludes \nLearning outcomes\nIn this presentation\, you will learn: \n\nHow mental health challenges impact construction and tunnelling professionals\nKey programs and support services offered by MATES in Construction\nPractical ways to foster inclusive and mentally healthy workplaces\nThe role of industry networks in strengthening peer support and wellbeing\n\nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\nFrank Cerone\nBusiness Manager Site Services\, Masterbuilders\n\nFrank is a Mechanical Engineer who has worked as a project manager across many industries over the past 25 years. For the past 12 years he has been the project manager for Bluey Technologies (now part of Master Builders Solutions)\, managing the waterproofing installation works across many of the tunnel projects across Australia and NZ. Frank is also heavily involved in the waterproofing design works for tunnels and underground structures\, assisting designers\, end users\, and building contractors when called upon for design\, and install methodology advice.

SUMMARY:Geological Uncertainty and Lessons from Geotechnical Forensics in Underground Projects
DESCRIPTION:Register now for this joint Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) & ATS Technical Session on Geotechnical uncertainty and lessons from geotechnical forensics in underground projects \nGeological uncertainty is an unavoidable aspect of underground construction. Despite advances in site investigation techniques and geological modelling\, the ground can never be fully characterised before excavation begins\, and project teams must routinely make critical decisions based on incomplete information. \n\nThis presentation explores how geological risk is allocated and managed in underground projects\, examining the relationship between geological models\, contractual frameworks\, and construction decision-making. Particular attention will be given to the observational method\, where interpretation and adaptation continue throughout excavation and the distinction between design and construction responsibilities can become less clear. \nDrawing on lessons from forensic investigations and dispute resolution processes\, Emilio will discuss how many underground project failures are not solely the result of unforeseen ground conditions\, but rather the decisions made in response to uncertainty. The presentation will provide practical insights into the technical\, commercial\, and organisational factors that influence outcomes on complex underground projects\, and the lessons these investigations offer for future practice. \nThis presentation will be of interest to geotechnical engineers\, engineering geologists\, tunnelling practitioners\, and project managers involved in the investigation\, design\, and delivery of underground infrastructure. \n\n\n\n \n\nDr Emilio Linde-Arias \nDirector\, Alvarez & Marsal \n\n\n\nDr Emilio Linde-Arias has over twenty years of international experience in major infrastructure projects\, combining expertise in geotechnical engineering\, engineering geology\, tunnelling\, and forensic engineering. His experience spans the planning\, site investigation\, design\, construction\, and forensic assessment of tunnels and other major infrastructure projects.\nHe has acted as a Geotechnical Expert in high-value disputes\, providing testimony before ICSID and ICC tribunals\, as well as in FIDIC Dispute Adjudication proceedings. His expert appointments have addressed issues relating to tunnel design\, geological conditions\, groundwater\, and construction delays. \nDr Linde-Arias has published on geological uncertainty and the contractual allocation of geological risk\, and has worked on major infrastructure projects across Europe\, the Middle East and the Americas. \n\n\n\n
