These systems are powerful\, but they are expensive\, require GPS to function reliably\, and are fundamentally limited by what a vehicle can reach. This presentation introduces a different class of technology: SLAM-based mobile LiDAR scanning. Rather than relying on GPS and inertial positioning\, SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping) builds a map of the environment in real time and uses that map to track its own position — making it inherently suited to GPS-denied environments such as tunnels\, underpasses\, and confined underground spaces. We’ll explain how SLAM works from first principles\, how it compares to traditional survey methods (total stations\, static TLS) and conventional mobile mapping systems\, and where each approach has genuine advantages. We’ll also discuss SLAM’s limitations: where it struggles\, what affects accuracy\, and the scenarios where traditional methods remain the better choice.
