SUMMARY:Umbrella canopy tubes in tunnel construction
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis event explores umbrella canopy tubes as a pre-support solution for tunnelling in unfavourable ground conditions. Fundamental understanding of the structural mechanics of canopy supports will be developed through the investigation of overburden loading on tunnel boundaries\, failure mechanisms of umbrella canopy tubes and ground material\, and monitoring systems for tunnels.   This theory will be applied to determine analytical solutions for simply loaded umbrella canopy tubes. From these findings\, the performance of umbrella canopy tubes on a Project will be investigated to validate the analytical solutions and provide context to theory.  Who should attend? This event is ideal for civil and geotechnical engineers\, tunnelling specialists\, and professionals involved in underground construction and infrastructure projects. It will also benefit those working in design\, analysis\, and monitoring of tunnel support systems\, as well as anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of ground behaviour and structural mechanics in challenging conditions. \nProgram timeline\n5.30 PM AEST – Registration and catering \n6.00 PM AEST – Event begins \n7.00 PM AEST – Event concludes \nLearning outcomes\nIn this presentation you will learn: \n\nUnderstand load distribution from overburden ground pressures onto umbrella canopy tubes.\nIdentify failure mechanisms and determining success of umbrella canopy tubes.\nDetermine effective application of monitoring systems in tunnels.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\nKate Burger\nGraduate Geotechnical Engineer\, AECOM\nKate attended the University of Queensland and works at AECOM as a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer. Kate is the winner of the ATS Tunnelling Student Award 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArun Sarathchandran\nPrincipal Geotechnical Engineer\, AECOM\nArun attended Delft University of Technology and works at AECOM as a Principal Geotechnical Engineer.
