SUMMARY:SLAM LiDAR for transport tunnel surveying
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe term “mobile mapping” is well established in the survey industry — typically referring to large vehicle-mounted systems that combine high-end LiDAR with precision GNSS and IMU hardware. These systems are powerful\, but they are expensive\, require GPS to function reliably\, and are fundamentally limited by what a vehicle can reach. This presentation introduces a different class of technology: SLAM-based mobile LiDAR scanning. Rather than relying on GPS and inertial positioning\, SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping) builds a map of the environment in real time and uses that map to track its own position — making it inherently suited to GPS-denied environments such as tunnels\, underpasses\, and confined underground spaces. We’ll explain how SLAM works from first principles\, how it compares to traditional survey methods (total stations\, static TLS) and conventional mobile mapping systems\, and where each approach has genuine advantages. We’ll also discuss SLAM’s limitations: where it struggles\, what affects accuracy\, and the scenarios where traditional methods remain the better choice. DESCRIPTION:Australian Design Experience on the Second Avenue Subway and the Manhattan Tunnel Project\nOverview\nTwo of the most significant underground projects in the United States are utilising Australian Designers Firstly\, the Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 (SAS2) is a USD $2.0 billion extension of New York City’s Q train from 96th Street to 125th Street. SAS2 adds three new stations and utilises tunnel boring\, cut-and-cover and conventional mining methods\, concurrently to achieve revenue service in 2032. He specializes in the design of mined tunnels and caverns and large-scale underground structures\, underpinned by advanced structural and geotechnical numerical modeling. On New York’s Second Avenue Subway\, Denis is the Design Discipline Lead for the station cavern and short tunnels. His Australian portfolio spans North East Link\, WestConnex\, and Sydney Metro\, where he has led complex sequential excavation and permanent lining design. He is a passionate member of the Australasian Tunnelling Society. \n \nDean Treweek \nDean Treweek (CPEng\, MIEAust\, NER\, RPEV\, RPEQ) is a Senior Associate at Delve Underground with 18 years of experience in tunnel\, shaft\, and tunnelling-related design\, with a particular focus on segmental lined tunnels and permanent secondary tunnel linings. On the Gateway Program’s Manhattan Tunnel Project\, Dean is the Design Unit Lead for the tunneling package including the precast expanded segmental tunnel lining design. His recent Australian portfolio spans North East Link\, Melbourne Metro\, M6 Motorway in Australia\, along with international work across the United States and the Middle East.
