Her research is on gender diversity and inclusion in engineering education and engineering practice. As Associate Dean\, Learning and Teaching she has strategic oversight of course and curriculum development and teaching quality\, in the QUT Faculty of Engineering\, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in nine engineering disciplines\, as well as in architecture and the built environment. In 2023 and 2024 QUT introduced an innovative and contemporary set of new degree programs including integrated vertical degrees\, giving students the opportunity to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and a Masters degree in one of the following areas: Robotics and AI\, Advanced Manufacturing\, Sustainable Infrastructure\, and Renewable Energy. Karen is Chair of the Engineers Australia Women in Engineering Queensland Committee\, and a member of the EA National Committee for Women in Engineering. She also leads a Diversity and Inclusion Special Interest Group in the Australasian Association for Engineering Education. \n \nDr Melinda Laundon \nSenior Research Fellow from the Australian Cobotics Centre and Centre for Decent Work and Industry\, Queensland University of Technology \nDr Melinda Laundon is a Senior Research Fellow from the Australian Cobotics Centre and Centre for Decent Work and Industry\, Queensland University of Technology. Melinda has a longstanding interest in gender equity at work and has researched fair pay\, pay transparency\, and flexible work. Her recent and current research projects include reward and recognition in the Australian finance sector\, the impact of emerging technologies on workers and organisations\, and university teaching and learning. SUMMARY:DAARWIN-GEMINI A novel tool to predict advance rate of a TBM in real-time
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nSAALG Geomechanics\, in collaboration with ACCIONA\, has developed DAARWIN-GEMINI\, a software system designed to optimize the performance of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) using machine learning-based techniques. The system key features include an advanced architecture for querying and processing data from the TBM database\, big data analysis and visualization in a web browser\, a ground-machine interaction model to predict the TBM advance rate and operation anomalies detection via machine learning algorithms to enhance the efficiency and reliability of tunnel excavation operations. The system has been validated in the Mularroya (Spain) hydraulic tunnel (small diameter shield TBM) in fractured rock mass with faulted and sheared zones\, and implemented in a larger diameter tunnel with EPB in Sao Paulo (Brazil) in weathered granite materials. SUMMARY:Geocomposite Tunnel Invert Drainage - Online technical presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presentation abstract:  \nCavidrain Invert geocomposite systems are used to form a drainage layer beneath the road pavement of tunnel floors. The use of Cavidrain Invert offers a number of advantages over more traditional methods (which use crushed stone and pipes) such as: (i) reduced excavation (as they form a much thinner layer compared to crushed stone layers\, requiring less excavation thus accelerating the construction process); (ii) faster installation (they can be quickly laid down\, reducing installation time compared to traditional methods); (iii) lower costs (achieved through the reduction of excavation and the acceleration of the construction process); (iv) improved drainage (as they provide larger void to facilitate a better water flow compared to crushed stone and thus ensuring effective drainage); (v) reduced mineral scale buildup (by mitigating problems caused by mineral deposits that can clog traditional drainage systems). SUMMARY:ITA Lecture - EPB tunnelling: environmental aspects and re-use opportunities of the conditioned muck
DESCRIPTION:The rapid development of mechanised tunnelling in the last decades has increased the tunnelling community’s focus on the environmental aspects of tunnel construction. The excavation carried out by using EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) machines often requires the use of foaming agents\, specific products that are added to the medium intended to be excavated\, in order to make the excavation process possible. The produced muck can be considered more than a simple “landfill material” and its re-use is strongly suggested in view of sustainable excavation and circular economy principles. However\, the correct management process should be followed. This process should take into account the presence of the used additives in the mucking itself. \nThis instalment of the Lunchtime lecture series will focus on ‘EPB tunnelling: environmental aspects and re-use opportunities of the conditioned muck’ in collaboration with ITA-AITES WG15. \nThis episode will feature three lectures: \n\nThe conditioning phase in EPB tunnelling and the issue of muck disposal – Prof. Carmine Todaro\nEnvironmental aspects of the conditioning phase\, chemical profile of foaming agents and the biodegradation process: the Italian approach before muck re-use – Dr. Anna Barra Caracciolo\nThe muck as a raw ingredient for industrial production\, its physical transformations and treatment\, including examples from construction sites – Prof. Robert Galler\n\nFollowing the three presentations there will be time for Q&A with the presenters\, with discussion and Q&A moderated by Dr. Nikolai Bobylev \nThe Lunchtime lecture series remains free and open to all. SUMMARY:Hobsons Bay main Yarra crossing duplication project
DESCRIPTION:The Hobsons Bay Main Sewer (HBMS)\, constructed in the 1960s\, transfers approximately 30 per cent of Melbourne’s wastewater to the Western Treatment Plan at Werribee. \nThe sewer alignment has a single sewer crossing under the Yarra River\, which has deteriorated to a point where it requires rehabilitation and/or replacement. DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe first section of the Suburban Rail Loop\, known as SRL East\, is a fully underground 26 kilometre metro line in Victoria\, stretching from Cheltenham in the south to Box Hill in the east. This segment will feature six stations.\nNew connections will be established with current heavy rail stations at Cheltenham\, Clayton\, Glen Waverley\, and Box Hill\, and new stations will be constructed at Monash and Burwood. Particularly\, Clayton interchange is designed to be a major transport hub\, linking regional travellers to Suburban Rail Loop. These six underground stations will be constructed 17 to 23 metres beneath the surface using a ‘bottom-up’ approach. He has been involved in several shafts design and construction projects\, including the French deep geological nuclear waste disposal project – 5 deep shafts (>500 m depth)\, Grand Paris Express Line 18 – 4 security shafts (25 to 50 m depth)\, and a utility gallery for the Olympic Village (St Denis) – 2 access shafts (20 to 55 m depth\, including one elliptical shaft). SUMMARY:Design and Construction of Alkimos Seawater Desalination Project
DESCRIPTION:Details\nOverview \nThe Australian Tunnelling Society (ATS)\, Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS)\, Australian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) invite you to an evening of knowledge sharing\, Q&A\, and networking. \nEvent Synopsis \nThe first stage of the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant (ASDP) is currently under construction by an alliance between Water Corporation\, Acciona\, and Jacobs. The plant is designed to produce 50 Gigalitres per annum\, with provision to extend to 100 gigalitres per annum in the future. Enabling earthworks to prepare the site for construction commenced in late 2023\, and works on the plant and associated infrastructure began in mid-2024. First water production is planned for 2028. \nThe offshore works include possibly the world’s largest secant piled peanut shaft that combines TBM launch and the permanent outfall chamber and intake pumping station.  The intake and outfall tunnels are designed for significant internal pressures\, and will be connected to intake and outfall structures on the sea bed via risers that are constructed in highly permeable soils. \nThis presentation will explain why the plant is needed to reduce dependence on rainfall and groundwater with a growing population. It gives an overview of the desalination process and the plant itself\, and the resulting demands for the seawater intake and brine outfall\, which are sized for the final 100 gigalitre per annum plant. The considerations that went into siting the intakes and outfalls in a highly environmentally sensitive location will be outlined\, how the resulting design process drove the need for the 2.6 km intake and 4 km outfall tunnels\, and the complex process of securing environmental approvals. It will also describe how the intake and outfall solutions on the sea bed minimise the impact to flora and fauna. \nThe presentation will then look at some of the challenges in designing and constructing the intake and outfall systems in a complex geotechnical setting that comprises highly variable Tamala Limestone and Ascot formations. SUMMARY:Incident sensing and fire safety in Heysen Tunnels
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt and Conrad as they address questions from the ATS Systems\, Operations\, and Maintenance Group\, focusing on the surety of Fixed Fire-Fighting System (FFFS) activation in the Heysen Tunnels.\nGiven that the Heysen Tunnels Safety Upgrade and Refurbishment Project was brownfield exercise with unique challenges\, South Australia’s DIT recognised that a bespoke engineering approach was required rather than recycling a prior tunnel design. \nThis presentation will offer insights into their philosophical approach for brownfield tunnel refurbishment\, specifically detailing the innovative design of the flame-sensing camera supervision and explaining the absence of (traditional) linear heat detectors in the Heysen Tunnels. \nWhile the misting system installation was a significant undertaking in the Heysen Tunnels\, that topic was comprehensively covered in the previous ATS seminar in Adelaide back in February 2025 and will not be treated in detail here.  This presentation focuses on topics distinct from the paper planned for the Australasian Tunnelling Conference 2025 (ATC2025) in Perth this November. \nThe Presenters\nMatthew Taylor \n \nAs a Chartered Electrical Engineer\, Matthew has over 35 years of experience within the electrical\, mechanical\, control and communications systems engineering fields within underground transport infrastructure project delivery environment within the UK\, Australia and New Zealand. \nA recognised innovator in the design\, installation\, testing\, commissioning and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the technology that drives modern transportation systems\, Matthew has played pivotal roles in the delivery of several of Australia’s largest projects since his migration from the UK in July 1997. \nConrad Stacey \n \nDr Conrad Stacey is a Director of leading underground ventilation and fire safety consultants Stacey Agnew.  Conrad’s credits include seminal reports on livestock shipping heat stress risk\, and co-authorship of a paper on the gravitational energy drivers for the geodynamo.  He has worked on hypersonic upper atmospheric flight and river and flood plain hydraulics.  A common thread through Conrad’s work in varied areas is a core focus on the fundamental physics and the engineering thought involved\, all within the big picture of the community interest.  He will talk about the fire engineering basis for decisions during tunnel refurbishments. \nChair Diane Mather \nDiane Mather is Senior Design Manager at Queensland Hydro\, with over 25 years of experience on major projects\, including Clem7 (NSBT)\, Airport Link\, City Rail Link\, WestConnex M5 East\, West Gate\, Sydney Metro\, Melbourne Metro\, Brisbane Cross River Rail\, Inland Rail\, and now Borumba Pumped Hydro. \nIn 2021\, Diane was honoured as the inaugural winner of the Women in Tunnelling Outstanding Achievement Award by the Australian Tunnelling Society.  Diane is a dedicated role model\, mentor\, and advocate for attracting and retaining women in engineering. \nThe eVENT Space\nThe seminar will be onsite at the eVENT Space in Stacey Agnew’s offices\, and online.  Catering for those networking onsite after the eVENT will be by Yim Thai restaurant Middle Park\, which is why registration includes dietary requirements.
