It celebrates how women engineers across the globe are uniting to drive innovation\, break down barriers\, and create sustainable solutions that benefit communities worldwide. \nJoin us for the evening for an insightful panel discussion at Western Harbour Tunnel Office about “Inclusion in Tunnelling” with our wonderful speakers that include: \nIsabel Wang\, Senior Project Engineer – Cross Passages \n \nIsabel Wang is a civil engineer with 15 years of field experience in the bridge\, civil\, and tunnelling industries\, Isabel graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Sydney and began her career as civil estimator\, seizing the opportunity to move into a site-based engineer role. During this time\, Isabel worked closely with site supervisors\, subcontractors\, and suppliers\, navigating the daily hustle of machinery\, drawings and construction crews. Isabel honed her technical skills and sparked her passion for leading teams\, building a solid foundation towards Project Engineer\, her current role as SPE and completion of an 8-month diploma course designed to advance the careers of female professionals. As a frontline leader\, she has successfully managed a number of complex\, billion-dollar projects for clients such as Transport for NSW and Sydney Metro. Her expertise in overseeing construction activities\, coupled with her leadership focus on safety\, efficiency\, and quality\, has been instrumental in her role. Her dedication and innovative problem-solving significantly contributed to the successful\, ahead-of-schedule\, and defect-free completion of the Sydney Olympic Park station box\, which she is immensely proud of. \nRaneen Nashi\, Project Engineer – North Fire Suppression \n \nRaneen Nashi is a mechanical engineer currently working as a Project Engineer on the Western Harbour Tunnel\, where she is responsible for delivering the fire suppression system for the northern section. She began her tunnelling career on WestConnex 3A\, gaining experience in both design and commissioning. Originally from Iraq\, Raneen completed her mechanical engineering degree in Australia after beginning her studies in biomechanics. Her interest in infrastructure and complex systems led her into the tunnelling sector. With a diverse technical background and cross-disciplinary experience\, she brings adaptability\, a practical mindset\, and a collaborative approach to delivering projects that benefit the wider community. \nEvonna Dai\, Project Engineer – Excavations \n \nEvonna Dai is a Project Engineer currently working on the Southern Launch Cavern Excavation Team for the Western Harbour Tunnel. She holds a double degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture from the University of Sydney. After starting her career in residential construction\, she transitioned into major infrastructure and tunnelling. The Western Harbour Tunnel marks her third tunnelling project\, following her work on WestConnex 3A and the CTP projects. Each project has provided unique challenges and rewarding experiences that have shaped her growing expertise in the industry. \nChristian D’Hondt- Construction Manager \n \nChristian D’Hondt has a successful track record in delivering major underground infrastructure projects across a range of contract models\, including Alliances\, ECI\, D&C\, Construct Only\, and ITC. He brings extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of underground construction\, particularly in complex urban environments. Christian has worked with Tier 1 tunnelling contractors on projects ranging from $50 million to $3.2 billion. His experience includes TBMs\, road headers\, shaft excavations\, conveyors\, tunnel logistics\, civil structures\, mechanical and electrical fit-outs\, live rail interface works\, and the commissioning and handover of underground infrastructure \nThis event will be both in-person and available to attend online.

SUMMARY:ATS Young Members Site Visit to Western Harbour Tunnel Stage 2
DESCRIPTION:Event Summary\nThe ATS Young Members invites all students and young professionals (35 years of age or under) on a site visit to the Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) Stage 2 works\, on Monday\, 2 December 2024. \nThe site visit will include a brief presentation on the WHT project followed by a guided tour of the Cammeray ventilation tunnels and Falcon Street decline tunnel. \nThis event is proudly supported by: \n \nProject background\nWestern Harbour Tunnel (WHT) will be a 6.5 kilometre road tunnel connecting the Rozelle Interchange to the Warringah Freeway near North Sydney and crossing underneath Sydney Harbour between Birchgrove and Waverton. The project is being delivered in two stages. Stage 2 includes connections from Stage 1 at Cove Street in Birchgrove\, underneath Sydney Harbour to the Warringah Freeway in North Sydney\, and complete tunnel fit-out. \nTunnel excavation is currently progressing below the Warringah Freeway towards Ridge Street in North Sydney. Additional roadheaders will continue excavating the mainline tunnels beneath Waverton towards Sydney Harbour. \nFor more information on Stage 2\, visit WHT Stage 2. \nEvent Registration\nPlease note that this is a registration to enter the draw for the site visit due to the limited number of attendees permitted\, it does not guarantee a place on the site visit itself. SUMMARY:Underground Space Design Using DFN-based Tools

To avoid the $30 cost for technical society members\, please register using your ATS registered email address and the cost will be waived as you advance through the registration process. \nAdvancing ground support design: Kinematic vs DEM-Based ground stability approaches \nEvent overview \nThe introduction of remote mining technologies is pushing designers to challenge traditional mechanical excavation sequences and redefine the balance between safety and productivity\, especially where worker’s OH&S is safeguarded by the use of remote and autonomous mining equipment. \nThe ability to quantify ground behaviour is key to defining ground risks and enhancing productivity while providing safe designs for underground spaces. The use of Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) models is an established approach for simulating ground conditions involving jointed rock masses. When combined with discontinuum numerical modelling\, the approach can capture realistic ground behaviours such as interlocking and unravelling. \nThis talk will present a comparison between static kinematic block stability assessments (the traditional DFN design method) against a DFN-based Distinct Element Modelling (DEM) approach. The comparison of the two DFN methods provides a framework into predicting interlocking and unravelling behaviours and an additional perspective on the definition of key blocks. This framework enables a quantifiable ground behaviour focused approach for the design of excavations and ground support. A case study of a recent project where this framework was implemented will be presented to demonstrate the benefits and limitations. \nLearning Outcomes \nDevelop greater insights into numerical modelling of discrete fracture networks Understand how these model methods are incorporated in real projects. \nSpeaker  \n \nJulian Ng BEng (Hons)\, MEngSc\, MIEAus \nSenior Geotechnical / Tunnelling Engineer\, Arup \nJulian is a Senior Engineer with Arup’s Sydney office and has over eight years of experience in geotechnics and tunnelling. He has been involved in a range of buildings\, transport\, water\, mining and civil projects including Snowy 2.0 and Sydney Metro in Australia and projects internationally in Hong Kong and the UK. He has in-depth knowledge of rock mechanics and complex numerical analyses gained through his experience in the design of tunnels and underground space. SUMMARY:ATS NSW - Discrete fracture network approach for underground support design optimisation
DESCRIPTION:Ground support design for underground rock engineering projects often adopts empirical methods\, which were mostly developed in 1960s and 1970s. While these methods have provided a useful tool to aid design\, they have typically been based on a limited database of project experience and so their results need to be interpreted in the context of local experience and engineering judgement. Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model allows inclusion of site-specific discontinuities data to be stochastically quantified and explicitly adopted as design input. Combined with 3D Distinct Element Method\, this approach offers a more quantifiable\, verifiable and reproduceable method to assess rock mass quality & behaviour in underground excavation projects. \nThis presentation demonstrates benefits gained from this integrated approach in ground support design for large span rock caverns using a case study. The use of DFN and explicit modelling has allowed ground support to be optimised based on site-specific and more realistic anticipated ground conditions. Ivan is the David Sugden Award winner for 2022 and will present his award-winning paper in person entitled: Discrete Fracture Network Approach in Ground Support Design Optimisation for Large Span Cavern in Jointed Rock Mass. The David Sugden Award was initiated by the ATS in 2004 to encourage young engineers to develop the art of technical writing. SUMMARY:The use of fibre optics to improve tunnel support design
DESCRIPTION:Optimisation of tunnel ground support through observational approaches necessitates a comprehensive monitoring programme to verify design assumptions regarding the performance of ground support systems. However the interaction of ground support and the surrounding rock mass is difficult to measure accurately\, with current methods focusing on individual locations or devices to represent a ground behaviour. \nThis presentation summarises a strategy to determine the continuous performance of ground support elements as part of the overall support system in conjunction with assessment of ground behaviour and its response to construction. Central to this is the application of a distributed optical strain sensing technology in combination with ground support elements. \nUse of this technology allows optimisation of ground support configuration\, improved ground characterisation\, improved safety\, reduced time and costs and the development and validation of numerical tools for design engineers. Subhash Soni from TfNSW will also provide a presentation on his experiences with TBM tunnelling in the Himalayas.\nAaron Lippett\, NSW Young Members Representative\, will also provide a brief update on the Young Member’s initiative to update the ATS Tunnel Design Guideline. \nSubhash’s presentation covers the challenges faced during TBM tunnelling in complex Himalayan geology at greater depth where ground conditions are highly variable with numerous fault zones. The complexity of tunnelling in the Himalaya’s coupled with case studies including retrieving the stuck TBMs and retrofitting the machine to resume operations. This promises to be an interesting talk to end the year. \nDr. Subhash Soni is a Fellow member of Engineers Australia and working as Technical Lead for Tunnel Structure within Advance Technical Services of TfNSW. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the design and construction of tunnels in road\, metro\, rail\, hydropower desalination and other utilities.

SUMMARY:Design and construction of immersed tube tunnels
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis type of tunnelling solution is usually favoured for harbour and sub-sea environments due to its shallow depth below the seabed\, that allows shorter tunnel lengths and better connections to the road network at both ends of the subsea section. \nIn addition\, the shape of an immersed tunnel is flexible to fit different projects. This form of tunnelling is where our speaker has spent most of his career as an engineer. He often gets asked how to connect watertight boxes in a chain together\, some nearly as tall as a three-story building\, in waters as deep as 50 metres. \nThis is one of the reasons why CK Tsang enjoys designing immersed tunnels; the seemingly impossible nature of the task\, but the immense benefit it brings to cities by connecting its people between their destinations. Its status really becomes an invisible landmark for a city.

This was the first of four major road tunnels where he was employed in engineering management roles for the contractor. Other notable recent projects were Downtown Line Contract 935\, Singapore and North West Rail Link\, and the Melbourne Metro project in Melbourne. \nEd’s experience on various infrastructure tunnels has enabled him to develop a unique range of technical competencies for which he is well renowned. Over the years he has fine-tuned the balance between the technical requirements of large civil infrastructure projects and the practical needs of construction requirements. \nBrendan Donohue\nConsultant\, Donohue Consulting Pty Limited \n \nAfter being employed by Thiess Pty Ltd for almost 20 years Brendan is now self-employed and offering his services to the building and civil construction industry. \nIn this consulting role since 2014 Brendan has undertaken many assignments on most of the major Infrastructure projects in NSW. These projects include Westconnex Stage 1B\, Moorebank Intermodal\, Northern Beaches Hospital\, Canberra Light Rail\, New Intercity Train Maintenance Facility\, Parramatta High School and the Meadowbank High Schools and BMA’s Blackwater Coal Mine. More recently\, he assisted a medium size Services contracting company in its purchase of another Services company. \nThe roles undertaken have covered the full scope of project services from Project documentation\, Tender preparation and evaluation\, project delivery and project completion on the client’s side\, the Project Manager’s team and the Construction team. Since February 2020\, Brendan has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Lipman Group Holdings Pty Ltd\, a NSW based building company. \nEric Hudson-Smith\nConsulting Geotechnical Engineer\, Geosite Pty Ltd \n \nEric Hudson-Smith has a Master’s Degree in Engineering and over 40 years’ experience on a wide range of projects in Australia\, New Zealand\, Indonesia\, Singapore\, Mongolia and Iran. He has worked on soft ground tunnelling projects for both Owners and Contractors at various stages of feasibility\, tender document preparation\, tendering\, design\, construction\, claims\, litigations and operating tunnel maintenance in Singapore\, New Zealand and Australia. \nProjects have included bored and cut and cover tunnels\, microtunnels\, pipejacks and HDD projects\, cross passages and deep shafts for road\, rail\, sewerage\, materials handling\, power and water supply schemes. He was Chair of the WA Chapter and Deputy National Chair\, Australian Tunnelling Society\, 2004-2015 and has been an active committee member since.

The panel will take the form of a facilitated conversation chaired by Rachael McCarrison. \n  \n\nProf. Arnold Dix \n \n\nProfessor Arnold Dix is a barrister\, mediator\, dispute adjudicator\, consultant and expert on all matters relating to tunnelling\, underground infrastructure\, fire and disasters\, as well as broader civil planning and environmental disputes. His career over the past 30 years has celebrated a unique hybrid of engineering\, geology\, law and risk management matters. Arnold’s key strength is in his ability to bridge the gap between the legal and technical dimensions of a problem\, risk assessment or dispute.\nArnold’s approach in legal matters is practical and commercially minded\, appreciating the many factors that are intrinsic to complex disputes to do with tunnelling\, mining\, engineering and underground works. He has niche high level experience and a considered appreciation of the issues at hand\, as well as the many stakeholder interests to be taken into account\nArnold is the current Vice President of the International Tunnelling Association (Consultative Status to United Nations).\n\n\nDr Bill Bamford \n \n\nDr Bill Bamford is recognised as a world leader in the field of specialised rock testing with a lifetime of experience and research devoted to the area. He has established a fine team at BRTS – highly qualified young testing engineers\, an experienced Laboratory Manager and a competent administrator.\nIn 1967\, Dr Bill Bamford commenced lecturing\, performing research and managing a rock testing laboratory at the University of Melbourne.\nDr Bamford is currently an honorary Principal Fellow and Associate Professor in the Melbourne School of Engineering in the University of Melbourne. His specialisations include rock mechanics\, mine design\, geotechnical engineering. He held the position of Vice-President for the International Society for Rock Mechanics for 8 years. Other appointments include being the National Chairman of the Australian Geomechanics Society and of the Australasian Tunnelling Society.\n\n\nDiane Mather \n \n\nDiane Mather is a Design Manager for the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s (ARTC) $15.5 billion Inland Rail Program. She is responsible for the design management of the Gowrie to Heldion (G2H) section of the a Public Private Partnership Project and the technical lead for the three tunnels within the Gowrie to Kagaru (G2K project) scope the most technically complex sections of the Inland Rail alignment. The tunnels technical lead scope covers tunnel design and construction\, tunnel systems and fire life safety\, key features for the safe service offering of the project.\nDiane has more than 20 years’ experience in design and construction of civil infrastructure and mining projects\, and has successfully developed\, managed and delivered a wide range of design and construction programs across many disciplines. This technical session will be in three parts. \nPART 1\nThree Decades of Australian Tunnel Systems Operation Bob Allen\, General Manager Sydney Harbour Tunnel. Bob’s 30 years operating then managing SHT means that he has had a hand in almost the complete lifecycle of a tunnel\, missing only tunnel decommissioning. His insights on maintenance\, systems upgrading\, and process improvement are built over three major systems upgrade cycles\, understanding the approaches\, what is important and what works well. SUMMARY:ATS NSW - Snowy 2.0 underground project overview and update

Snowy 2.0 is a pumped hydro scheme linking two existing reservoirs\, characterised through 27km of waterway tunnels\, with a total of 40km of tunnelling works and an power station located 800m underground. \nSpeakers\nSabrina Kost\nManager\, Tunnels\, SMEC \nSabrina is the Group Manager for SMEC’s tunnels team in Sydney and a Chartered Principal Engineer with over 15 years of experience. Since joining SMEC in 2008\, Sabrina has been involved in the design\, planning & management of major complex underground infrastructure projects. She has extensive experience in the design of tunnels\, shafts and cavern support systems in challenging ground conditions\, ranging from hard rock to soft ground including subaqueous environments. Projects include TBM\, road header\, drill & blast and pipe jacking construction techniques. Sabrina also has a strong background in design review and compliance verification\, certification roles and due diligence. \nKara Stariha\nSenior Engineer\, Geotechnics\, SMEC \nKara is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with 8 years’ experience\, working in SMEC’s Sydney Geotechnical team. Kara has worked on the geotechnical components of a range of multidisciplinary projects\, from road and rail to dams and tunnels. She has worked as a designer\, construction phase supervision\, and now more recently on the client’s side on Snowy 2.0. SUMMARY:Advances in soil conditioning technology used on Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines
DESCRIPTION:During tunnelling with Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBMs) huge amounts of soil are removed for the tunnel construction with foams and polymers mixed in during excavation to modify its characteristics. This process\, which is directly linked to TBM performance\, is called soil conditioning and is an important factor in achieving a project’s target advance rate. \nThe potential environmental impacts of the soil conditioning regime also require close consideration\, as the conditioning agents can encounter underground water and remain in the excavation spoil for a period\, so repurposing of tunnel spoil depends upon the material being non-toxic\, a major commercial consideration. Soil conditioning products should therefore be selected for performance with minimal potential for environmental impact—considering their toxicity and biodegradability. \nJoin Richard Schulkins and Luke Foyster for an overview of soil conditioning fundamentals\, new environmentally friendly technology\, and learn from the shared experience of MAPEIs Underground Technology Team (UTT) on EPB projects worldwide\, including Europe’s largest EPB project—Santa Lucia in Northern Italy. \nSpeakers\nRichard Shulkins\n \nRichard has worked in the tunnelling industry since graduating from Camborne School of Mines in 1989. He has worked for Mapei since 2005 in sales and whilst he enjoyed working as a contractor\, he has come to realise that working in sales\, his knowledge base has risen as exponentially as his air miles. This is due to being called to projects worldwide in a problem-solving capacity. He is firmly of the belief that tunnelling is the most interesting and satisfying career choice he could have made. He is also leading a working group within ITA to provide guidelines on responsible disposal of tunnelling waste. \nLuke Foyster\n \nLuke Foyster is a third generation civil and mining engineer with seven years’ experience in underground works. Starting his career as an undergraduate on the Amaroo Main Sewer developed his keen interest in mechanised tunnelling. In his current position as Technical Engineer with Mapei’s Underground Technology Team\, Luke has been privileged to have an opportunity to expand his knowledge of construction products and materials while being trained at the Group’s headquarters in Milan\, Italy. By working with clients in Australia and New Zealand he has developed specialist knowledge in annulus grouting\, ground conditioning and TBM slurry additives\, while continuing to expand his knowledge in technologies for waterproofing\, ground consolidation and shotcrete. \n

SUMMARY:Recent Innovations in Ground Support in Sydney Road Tunnels

Click through the link on the right to register. \nOverview\nThe increased demand to future-proof tunnel projects with respect to long term traffic predictions has led to the proposal of some exceptionally large span tunnels in recent road projects in Australia. For example\, some of the current projects have main line tunnels with continuous excavated spans up to 22 m\, besides other enlarged sections and Y-junction caverns that approach 34 m in span.  These projects do not come without their challenges particularly when they are also combined with a very tight construction programme. David and Mark will present some of their experiences in recent projects in Australia and how some of these challenges were tackled via innovative design solutions. SUMMARY:NSW - Collaborative Procurement of Underground Works The FIDIC Emerald Book
DESCRIPTION:In June 2018\, the NSW government released ‘A ten point commitment to the construction sector’. The statement\, developed by the NSW Government’s Construction Leadership Group (CLG)\, includes a commitment to ‘procure and manage projects in a more collaborative way’.  To inform this discussion the ATS wishes to introduce the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) ‘Emerald Book Conditions of Contract for Underground Works’.  This is the first international contract form specifically tailored for underground works.  It has a specific focus on the inherent geotechnical subsurface risks associated with this type of construction.\n\n\nThe document\, developed by the ITA and first issued in May 2019\, is based on the principle that risks shall be allocated to the Party that is best positioned to manage them. The presentation will provide an overview of the main concepts of the new FIDIC Emerald Book\, with emphasis on the use of the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) as the key document that defines the contractual geotechnical baselines agreed by the Parties and the risk allocation mechanisms that are used for re-measurement and adjustment of construction time and cost. \n\nThe ITA press release for the Emerald Book can be found here. \n\nAbout the Speaker\nAlex Gomes is a civil engineer with over 27 years of international experience in the design and construction of multi-disciplinary tunnel and underground works and applied geotechnical and geomechanical engineering.
