She holds a master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering and currently works as a Senior Associate Engineer at SMEC. Sam has over 17 years of experience in the design and construction of infrastructure projects. As a passionate Tunnel Engineer\, Sam enjoys helping others learn and fosters a growth mindset. \nHer expertise includes the design and analysis of tunnels\, specifically SEM and micro-tunnelling projects\, as well as Cut & Cover structures\, temporary and permanent soil support systems\, and shaft excavations. Recent key projects she has worked on in Australia include M6 Stage1\, Sydney Metro West\, the North-East Link Project\, and the Melbourne Metro Project. \n  \n \nMathieu Gonzalez  MSc\, FICE\, CEng\, PMP \nEngineering Director for T2DA – Bouygues \nMathieu is currently the Engineering Director for T2DA in Adelaide\, Australia. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)\, Chartered Engineer and Project Manager Professional (PMP). \nHe has over 18  years of experience in the construction industry\, from design to construction methodology to technical direction for main contractor. He has been involved on various projects in France\, Spain\, Hong Kong and Australia starting by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) projects to manage the technical team on major infrastructure tunneling project with multidisciplinary deliverables (tunnel construction to project commissioning) from building\, civil works\, tunneling works\, rail\, E&M\, T&C\, etc. \n  \n \nNicholas Bedford CPEng  \nTechnical Director – Aurecon \nNicholas is a Technical Director at Aurecon with 18 years of experience in the tunnelling industry. He currently leads Aurecon’s tunnelling team in NSW. With a focus on detailed design\, construction phase services\, and independent certification\, he has made significant contributions to major infrastructure projects in Sydney\, including NorthConnex\, Westconnex\, and is currently involved in the Western Harbour Tunnel project. \nNicholas previously spent several years in Hong Kong\, where he gained valuable international experience working on the MTR South Island Line Contract 901 at Admiralty Station. During this time\, he gained an appreciation for the challenges faced by engineers who relocated overseas. This experience not only enhanced his technical skills but also provided valuable insights into the cultural and logistical complexities of international teams. \n

SUMMARY:Underground Space Design Using DFN-based Tools

To avoid the $30 cost for technical society members\, please register using your ATS registered email address and the cost will be waived as you advance through the registration process. \nAdvancing ground support design: Kinematic vs DEM-Based ground stability approaches \nEvent overview \nThe introduction of remote mining technologies is pushing designers to challenge traditional mechanical excavation sequences and redefine the balance between safety and productivity\, especially where worker’s OH&S is safeguarded by the use of remote and autonomous mining equipment. \nThe ability to quantify ground behaviour is key to defining ground risks and enhancing productivity while providing safe designs for underground spaces. The use of Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) models is an established approach for simulating ground conditions involving jointed rock masses. When combined with discontinuum numerical modelling\, the approach can capture realistic ground behaviours such as interlocking and unravelling. \nThis talk will present a comparison between static kinematic block stability assessments (the traditional DFN design method) against a DFN-based Distinct Element Modelling (DEM) approach. The comparison of the two DFN methods provides a framework into predicting interlocking and unravelling behaviours and an additional perspective on the definition of key blocks. This framework enables a quantifiable ground behaviour focused approach for the design of excavations and ground support. A case study of a recent project where this framework was implemented will be presented to demonstrate the benefits and limitations. \nLearning Outcomes \nDevelop greater insights into numerical modelling of discrete fracture networks Understand how these model methods are incorporated in real projects. \nSpeaker  \n \nJulian Ng BEng (Hons)\, MEngSc\, MIEAus \nSenior Geotechnical / Tunnelling Engineer\, Arup \nJulian is a Senior Engineer with Arup’s Sydney office and has over eight years of experience in geotechnics and tunnelling. He has been involved in a range of buildings\, transport\, water\, mining and civil projects including Snowy 2.0 and Sydney Metro in Australia and projects internationally in Hong Kong and the UK. He has in-depth knowledge of rock mechanics and complex numerical analyses gained through his experience in the design of tunnels and underground space. With specialist skills in discrete element modelling techniques\, he continues to push the boundaries of Arup’s global tunnelling and rock mechanics group.
