SUMMARY:Water mist suppression for road tunnels
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nWater mist suppression systems are an established and approved technology in many high-risk and/or special hazard applications are increasing in popularity for overseas road tunnels. This presentation will discuss differences between water mist and deluge and consider implementation and interaction with other systems and structural design. \nWater deluge systems have remained the established means of automatic fire suppression within Australian road tunnels for over 30 years. Whilst effective in protection of life and preservation of tunnels in a fire\, there are compromises; the cost and scale of the systems\, the burden imposed on the tunnel drainage systems\, and potential impact on occupants and responding emergency personnel\, to name a few. Water mist suppression systems are an established and approved technology in many high-risk / special hazard applications. \nAs an alternative in road tunnels\, water mist suppression systems address many of the issues inherent with deluge\, whilst achieving similar outcomes. Much less water is used\, which impacts cost and space associated with both suppression and drainage. For these reasons and many more\, water mist suppression systems are increasing in popularity in overseas road tunnels. Hurdles to local implementation are varied\, and include lack of familiarity/local precedents\, potential interactions with smoke ventilation systems\, and potential considerations for time-temperature curves and therefore structural design. His current position is the deputy director of a UQ Sustainable Infrastructure Research Hub\, with a lead focus on digitalisation for a sustainable infrastructure future. SUMMARY:Design and construction of immersed tube tunnels
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis type of tunnelling solution is usually favoured for harbour and sub-sea environments due to its shallow depth below the seabed\, that allows shorter tunnel lengths and better connections to the road network at both ends of the subsea section. \nIn addition\, the shape of an immersed tunnel is flexible to fit different projects. This form of tunnelling is where our speaker has spent most of his career as an engineer. He often gets asked how to connect watertight boxes in a chain together\, some nearly as tall as a three-story building\, in waters as deep as 50 metres. \nThis is one of the reasons why CK Tsang enjoys designing immersed tunnels; the seemingly impossible nature of the task\, but the immense benefit it brings to cities by connecting its people between their destinations. Its status really becomes an invisible landmark for a city.

The winning paper prize includes attendance to the following years WTC. For more details click through the link below. \n \nThis webinar presents design and construction issues of two pedestrian tunnels from Thomson Line metro in Singapore which were built below two operating metro lines. Two tunnels with cross-sectional area ranging from 50m2 to 85m2 are excavated below an existing operational rail tunnel (with vertical clearance of less than 2.7m) and below an operational metro station. The tunnel excavation below the operational metro tunnel is carried out using pipe roof method and the tunnel excavation below the existing station base slab is carried out by underpinning the structure as the excavation progressed. \nSpeaker\nSentilnath GT | Senior Tunnel Engineering\, GHD\nAs a Chartered civil engineer\, Senthil has 12 years of experience in diversified geotechnical projects such as TBM and SEM/NATM Tunnels\, excavation support system (for mining and urban development projects) and site supervision. DESCRIPTION:Discover new developments and implementations of segmental linings in this informed presentation by Jacobs’ Technical Director for Tunnels\, Anthony Harding. \nThousands of kilometres of precast concrete segmental linings are erected behind TBMs every year. The industry is full of suppliers\, designers\, and contractors looking to use them in new ways\, to reduce costs\, and improve performance. Jacobs’ Technical Director for Tunnels Asia-Pacific\, Anthony Harding has recently teamed up with Arup’s Jon Hurt in New York to compile a list of some of the most important developments in this field\, gathering some experiences of implementing them. \nSpeaker\n  \nAnthony Harding | Technical Director for Tunnels Asia-Pacific at Jacobs \nGaining his degree and PhD from Edinburgh University\, Anthony joined Halcrow (now part of CH2M) in London in 2000where he worked on a wide range of tunnel projects across the road\, rail\, power and water industries. His experience covers TBM and conventional tunnelling\, including the design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels and other assets impacted by tunnelling. \nAnthony has acted in roles as technical manager and reviewer for multidisciplinary designs\, usually within design-build environments. He has a particular interest in TBM tunnelling and has been involved in over 25 TBM tunnelling projects\, including more than five large-diameter tunnels\, many of which have been steel fibre reinforced.
