SUMMARY:Precast lining in mined spur tunnels on Sydney Metro West: WTP
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Gamuda Laing O’Rourke consortium on the Western Tunnelling Package of Sydney Metro West adopted an innovative precast lining solution for two spur tunnels connecting the dive structure to the underground junction caverns at Clyde. The selection was influenced by the tunnel length\, tight alignment curves and the desire to achieve lining performance consistent with the mainline tunnels. \nThe mined horseshoe-shaped tunnels\, constructed with rock bolts and shotcrete primary support\, presented unique challenges for the design and installation of the permanent lining. To address these challenges\, a bespoke precast lining system and dedicated Lining Erection Machine (LEM) were developed in collaboration with Herrenknecht. \nThis presentation will examine the engineering rationale behind the design\, the development of the lining system\, construction methodology and lessons learned during project delivery. Attendees will gain practical insights into innovative tunnelling solutions\, underground construction challenges and the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects. \nThis event is produced by the Australian Tunnelling Society. \nWho should attend?\nSuited to all engineers with an interest in tunnelling from graduates to principals. Students are also encouraged to attend. \nLearning Outcomes\nIn this presentation\, you will learn: \n\nHow precast lining systems can be applied in mined tunnel environments\nThe key design considerations\, constraints and risks associated with permanent tunnel linings\nHow specialised construction equipment\, including the Lining Erection Machine\, supported project delivery\nPractical lessons learned from planning\, construction and implementation on a major rail infrastructure project\n\nProgram\nIn-person: \n5.30 pm AEDT – Registrations open \n6.00 pm AEDT – Presentation commences \n7.00 pm AEDT – Presentation concludes \n7.05 pm AEDT – Networking and drinks \n8.00 pm AEDT- Event concludes \nOnline: \n6.00 pm AEDT – Presentation commences \n7.00 pm AEDT – Presentation concludes \n8.00 pm AEDT- Event concludes \nAbout the speakers\n\n\n\nJeremy Nethercott MIEAust CPEng NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus)\nGamuda Australia\n\nJeremy Nethercott is an experienced Project Manager with nearly 20 years’ experience in the delivery of major tunnelling\, civil\, and rail infrastructure projects across Australia and Europe. Most recently\, Jeremy successfully delivered the mined tunnels and associated works for Gamuda on the Sydney Metro Western Tunnelling Package\, with overall responsibility for safety\, program\, cost\, quality and environmental performance. His expertise encompasses complex underground construction\, major civil structures\, innovative tunnelling methodologies\, multidisciplinary coordination\, stakeholder management and the delivery of projects within highly constrained environments. Jeremy has also held key roles across other major projects including Sydney Metro\, WestConnex\, M6 Motorway and Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmmar Miryazee MIEAust CPEng (Civil & Geotech) NER APAC\nGHD\n\nAmmar Mirzayee is a Technical Director and Chartered Professional Engineer with 16 years of experience in geotechnical and structural engineering\, specialising in mined and TBM tunnels\, underground structures\, tunnel linings and construction-phase services. He currently serves as Design Discipline Lead and Tunnels Construction Phase Services Area Lead for the Sydney Metro West Western Tunnelling Package. Ammar has contributed to major transport infrastructure projects in Australia and internationally\, with particular expertise in rock mechanics\, reinforced concrete design\, ground-structure interaction and advanced numerical modelling. \n\n\n\n\nSponsors\nHuge thanks to our event sponsors:
