DESCRIPTION:Presentation Summary\nFrom NorthConnex in 2015 to the Western Harbour Tunnel Project today\, we’re reflecting on ten years of change in tunnelling technology and sharing what we’ve learned about monitoring\, navigation\, and robotics. \nOn the monitoring side\, total stations have become far more power-efficient\, underground WiFi enables faster deployments\, and IoT devices now offer better battery life with connectivity options like Starlink. We’ve also started using 3D printing for custom solutions\, and we’ll share practical lessons on what actually works in the field. \nNavigation technology has advanced considerably for roadheaders and bolters. Sandvik’s Cutronic and TRO systems are making tunnelling safer and more precise\, while improvements in visualisation and PTT management help operators work more effectively. Bolter systems have matured with auto-bolt selection\, and web-based platforms now make data far more accessible. \nThe robotics in construction space is showing interesting possibilities. We’ve provided positioning for equipment like ROBY\, Paneller\, and Wall Shaver\, though it’s still early days. SUMMARY:Incident sensing and fire safety in Heysen Tunnels
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt and Conrad as they address questions from the ATS Systems\, Operations\, and Maintenance Group\, focusing on the surety of Fixed Fire-Fighting System (FFFS) activation in the Heysen Tunnels.\nGiven that the Heysen Tunnels Safety Upgrade and Refurbishment Project was brownfield exercise with unique challenges\, South Australia’s DIT recognised that a bespoke engineering approach was required rather than recycling a prior tunnel design. \nThis presentation will offer insights into their philosophical approach for brownfield tunnel refurbishment\, specifically detailing the innovative design of the flame-sensing camera supervision and explaining the absence of (traditional) linear heat detectors in the Heysen Tunnels. \nWhile the misting system installation was a significant undertaking in the Heysen Tunnels\, that topic was comprehensively covered in the previous ATS seminar in Adelaide back in February 2025 and will not be treated in detail here.  This presentation focuses on topics distinct from the paper planned for the Australasian Tunnelling Conference 2025 (ATC2025) in Perth this November. \nThe Presenters\nMatthew Taylor \n \nAs a Chartered Electrical Engineer\, Matthew has over 35 years of experience within the electrical\, mechanical\, control and communications systems engineering fields within underground transport infrastructure project delivery environment within the UK\, Australia and New Zealand. \nA recognised innovator in the design\, installation\, testing\, commissioning and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the technology that drives modern transportation systems\, Matthew has played pivotal roles in the delivery of several of Australia’s largest projects since his migration from the UK in July 1997. \nConrad Stacey \n \nDr Conrad Stacey is a Director of leading underground ventilation and fire safety consultants Stacey Agnew.  Conrad’s credits include seminal reports on livestock shipping heat stress risk\, and co-authorship of a paper on the gravitational energy drivers for the geodynamo.  He has worked on hypersonic upper atmospheric flight and river and flood plain hydraulics.  A common thread through Conrad’s work in varied areas is a core focus on the fundamental physics and the engineering thought involved\, all within the big picture of the community interest.  He will talk about the fire engineering basis for decisions during tunnel refurbishments. \nChair Diane Mather \nDiane Mather is Senior Design Manager at Queensland Hydro\, with over 25 years of experience on major projects\, including Clem7 (NSBT)\, Airport Link\, City Rail Link\, WestConnex M5 East\, West Gate\, Sydney Metro\, Melbourne Metro\, Brisbane Cross River Rail\, Inland Rail\, and now Borumba Pumped Hydro. \nIn 2021\, Diane was honoured as the inaugural winner of the Women in Tunnelling Outstanding Achievement Award by the Australian Tunnelling Society.  Diane is a dedicated role model\, mentor\, and advocate for attracting and retaining women in engineering. \nThe eVENT Space\nThe seminar will be onsite at the eVENT Space in Stacey Agnew’s offices\, and online.  Catering for those networking onsite after the eVENT will be by Yim Thai restaurant Middle Park\, which is why registration includes dietary requirements.

She began her tunnelling career on WestConnex 3A\, gaining experience in both design and commissioning. Originally from Iraq\, Raneen completed her mechanical engineering degree in Australia after beginning her studies in biomechanics. Her interest in infrastructure and complex systems led her into the tunnelling sector. With a diverse technical background and cross-disciplinary experience\, she brings adaptability\, a practical mindset\, and a collaborative approach to delivering projects that benefit the wider community. \nEvonna Dai\, Project Engineer – Excavations \n \nEvonna Dai is a Project Engineer currently working on the Southern Launch Cavern Excavation Team for the Western Harbour Tunnel. She holds a double degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture from the University of Sydney. After starting her career in residential construction\, she transitioned into major infrastructure and tunnelling. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe first road tunnel misting fire suppression system in Australia has now been commissioned in the Heysen Tunnels\, outside Adelaide. \nIn this hybrid event\, the ATS presents an afternoon of talks celebrating the Heysen Tunnel Refit & Safety Upgrade Project holistically and canvases some: \n\nTechnical details of the water mist installed for fire suppression\,\nThe context of road tunnels within the different applications of mist in other infrastructure and spaces\, and\nAn international picture of road tunnel safety governance.\n\nTiming (NOTE CHANGE IN TIMING)\n\n2:00 to 2:30 pm\, arrival and refreshments\n2:30 to 5:00 pm\, presentations\n5:00 to 7:00 pm\, refreshments and networking\, possibly visit the mist demonstration downstairs.\n\nSpeakers\nAlex Palle \n \nAlex Palle is the owner and CEO of VID FIREKILL\, the leader in low pressure mist\, and the renowned test institute Danish Fire Laboratories. He will fly into Adelaide to support his local distributor LPG Fire Australia who supplied and supported the Heysen mist system. With a BSc and an MBA\, growing up in a nozzle-designing household\, working all roles through the businesses at various stages\, and now owning the companies\, Alex has unique understanding of how to break up water. His life vision is to change the “conventional” fixed firefighting industry by bringing innovative\, value adding and sustainable firefighting technologies to the market. He will describe the science behind misting nozzles\, and road tunnel misting technology within the broad spectrum of mist applications. \nDr Conrad Stacey \n \nDr Conrad Stacey is a Director of leading underground ventilation and fire safety consultants Stacey Agnew\, and Vice President of Delve Stacey Agnew in the US. Conrad’s credits include seminal reports on livestock shipping heat stress risk\, and co-authorship of a paper on the gravitational energy drivers for the geodynamo. He has worked on hypersonic upper atmospheric flight and river and flood plain hydraulics. A common thread through Conrad’s work in varied areas is a core focus on the fundamental physics and the engineering thought involved\, all within the big picture of the community interest. He will talk about the design of the Heysen suppression system\, operating policy on fire suppression\, and organisational barriers to adoption of road tunnel misting. \nShane Faulkhead \n \nShane Faulkhead of M&E Solutions\, for this purpose also representing McConnell Dowell as Managing Contractor for the Heysen Tunnels Refit & Safety Upgrade Project. Besides his tunnel experience\, Shane has global experience in a very diverse range of engineering fields\, making him a polymath of engineering and site installation. He was intimately involved with the equipment installation and problem solving in the Heysen project. His talk will focus on construction of the fire suppression systems in Heysen and in other forms of tunnel. \nRahul Gupta \n \nRahul Gupta is a civil engineering professional with three decades in all aspects of highway infrastructure development\, from strategic planning & engineering to cost control and environmental management. He is currently Chief Engineer (Tunnels) in the Indian Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Secretary General of the Indian Road Congress. Previously\, he served as Technical Secretary to the Director General (Road Development) and Special Secretary to the Government of India\, providing advice on all road and highway development issues in the country. He is a member of Technical Committee on Tunnels of the World Road Association (PIARC) and the Governing Council of the Tunnelling Association of India (TAI). He also served as Technical Advisor to PIARC’s Strategic Theme (Resilient Infrastructure). \nRahul has implemented major bridge and tunnel projects in the Himalayan region\, successfully supervising the construction of India’s two longest highway tunnels\, the Chenani-Nashiri (9 km) and Banihal-Qazigund (8 km). Over the past five years\, he has overseen highway development projects in the strategically critical North-Western Himalayan region. \nRahul gets actively involved in disaster rescue operations. He ensured swift relief to flood victims by promptly restoring highway communication in close coordination with the army during the worst-recorded floods in the Kashmir Valley in September 2014. He also successfully coordinated the rescue operation of stranded workers in the collapsed Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarakhand\, with part of that coordination being calling on our own Arnold Dix to assist. \nRahul offers a high-level expert overview of safety issues on Indian roads and in tunnels\, and will give us the benefit of a different perspective to the paradigms we follow in Australia\, including on adoption of water based suppression. \n Session Chair\nMr Phil Cornish \n \n Engineering Director from Bell Rock Engineering. SUMMARY:Industry Update - The Snowy 2.0 project
DESCRIPTION:For the online event join by clicking here at 5.55pm on 26 June \nFrom the Owner’s Engineer perspective \nThe Snowy 2.0 project is a major pumped-storage expansion of the Snowy Mountains hydropower scheme\, which forms a vital part of Australia’s energy transition towards a low-emissions future. The project will substantially increase the existing scheme’s capacity\, adding 2200 MW of energy generation capacity and large-scale energy storage of 350\,000 MW hours. At full capacity\, Snowy 2.0 could operate for almost seven days without recharge pumping\, providing deep energy storage necessary to underpin increasing wind and solar generation. \nNot unlike the existing scheme\, the Snowy 2.0 project involves substantial underground works\, both in terms of scale and complexity. The key elements include 33km of TBM-driven tunnels\, 10km of D&B tunnels\, three shafts\, and a large power station cavern complex located 750m underground. \nThis Technical Session will provide an overview of the Snowy 2.0 project\, along with an update on the delivery of key underground elements. Following this\, a deeper dive will be provided into elements of the geotechnical approach to the delivery of the underground power station cavern complex. \nThe Snowy 2.0 caverns are amongst the largest and deepest in the world and are being delivered with a highly observational approach\, in which design predictions are continually reviewed against actual ground behaviour and support performance during construction. \nIn support of this approach\, the project has developed a comprehensive 3D ground model that spans not only the caverns but also the surrounding network of tunnels. \nLearning outcomes \n• Snowy 2.0 project update \n• Cavern excavation using an observational approach \n• Cavern 3D geological model \nTimings \n5.00 pm – 6.00 pm Networking (Refreshments and drinks will be served) \n6.00 pm – 7.00 pm Presentation \nSpeakers \n \nKara Stariha \nAssociate Geotechnical Engineer\, SMEC \nKara Stariha has eleven years’ experience in a variety of civil\, tunnelling\, dams and hydropower projects in NSW\, ACT and internationally. She has worked on all phases of project development\, from feasibility studies and site investigations to design and construction phase supervision. Kara’s primary interest is in ground characterisation\, rock mechanics\, tunnelling\, and the use of remote sensing in assessing the stability of rock slopes. She is experienced in guiding the technical implementation of risk-sharing contractual mechanisms (GBR)\, particularly as applied to tunnelling projects in complex geological environments.  \nWorking on the Owner’s team for Snowy Hydro 2.0 since 2018\, Kara has undertaken several roles relating to geotechnical engineering and ground classification throughout her time on the project. In the feasibility and reference design stages\, Kara worked on the site investigations planning and execution\, and in the geological and geotechnical interpretation and parametrisation along the tunnel alignments for input into the GIR and GBR. After taking a break from S2.0 in 2019 to complete her masters in Graz\, Austria\, Kara returned to S2.0 in 2021 as tunnelling commenced. At this time\, S2.0 utilised a contractual risk share mechanism in the form of a Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR).  \nUntil 2023 Kara led the collection and assessment of incoming data and the application of this to assign conditions in accordance with the GBR. Kara now leads the Ground Model team\, taking a higher-level approach to interpretation\, modelling\, and geological risk management. The team collects and interprets geological and geotechnical information\, developing a model to inform Snowy Hydro of potential geological risks and tying this into the broader project risk assessments. This allows informed feedback to be provided to the contractor and assists Snowy Hydro in making key decisions around construction methodologies and forward investigations. Kara has driven the commencement of regular discussions with the contractor and designer on upcoming geotechnical and geological risks\, allowing all parties to propose and agree on appropriate mitigation measures. \n \nBen Chapman \nTunnels and Geotech Lead – Snowy 2.0\, SMEC \nBen is a Senior Associate Civil Engineer with 15 years’ experience in the design and delivery of tunnels and underground structures for a range of road\, rail\, water\, and hydropower projects. Ben’s expertise relates to both structural and geotechnical engineering\, covering all stages of project delivery\, from planning and design to on-site construction and maintenance.  \nCurrently\, Ben is seconded to Snowy Hydro from SMEC Australia\, where he has maintained a key involvement in the Snowy 2.0 project since the feasibility study initially commenced in 2017. Initially commencing as a Senior Tunnel Engineer\, Ben was responsible for the coordination and design of the primary support systems and final linings for the tunnels\, shafts\, and caverns. He then continued a similar role in the subsequent reference design phase\, with additional involvement in the preparation and negotiation of the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR)\, Employer’s Requirements and geotechnical risks register.  \nSince the award of the main Snowy 2.0 construction contract in 2019\, Ben has been the Tunnels\, Caverns and Geotechnical Discipline Lead and GBR Manager for the Snowy 2.0 Owner’s team. In this capacity\, Ben leads a multi-disciplinary team of tunnel and geotechnical engineers and geologists in the review of detailed design and construction documentation for the projects’ substantial underground works. Ben also leads the team administering the GBR for the project\, which is based on the principles of the recent FIDIC Emerald Book and is the first of its kind to be implemented in Australia.  \nIn this capacity\, Ben is responsible for the development and implementation of geotechnical classification systems and associated GBR management plans for conventional and TBM excavations. This allows for actual ground conditions to be assessed against the GBR baseline conditions and subsequent adjustment of time and cost to be applied in accordance with the contract. \nThe ATS Victorian Chapter and ICE Australia co-host the seminar.
